Hosting multiple domains

I've just been reading through the forum and am really impressed with some of the figures you guys are making! It seems impossible to me, I'm lucky to earn $100 in several months on my site www.sf-books.com.

My question is for those of you with multiple sites, how to you handle hosting? Do you have multiple hosting accounts, or are all your domains on a single account? It must cost a fortune to host all those sites.
I have a number of domains that I want to host, and reading this forum has giving me the impeteus to fianally do something!

Well most people make use of reseller accounts or shared hosting accounts that offer you the ability to host multiple sites using just the one account. Most of them aren't that expensive provided that you don't have sites that are extremely CPU intensive otherwise you will definitely need to look at dedicated hosting (which is expensive).

For static sites a normal hosting account which allows you to host multiple domains should be more than enough.

i use 2 dedicated servers and a vps

yes it costs a fortune but it costs money to make money unfortunately, ironicaly
the dedicated servers have only one site each (they are big) while the VPS has several dozen

u can find alot of cheap reliable hosting for circa $10 a month that will let u host several sites comfortably

I use a dedicated server. I colocated this server with 150 Euro/month, in a Hostng datacenter in Bucharest.

I can host about 10 BIG websites (over 200.000 visitors /month each) with my Single XEON machine.

    Or about 200 small websites.

I also have a Cpanel license.

    I have two IP's.

Expertu, I presume it is definately worth hosting your own dedicated server?

Do you manage the server or have it pre-managed for you?

Obviously it is worth it, how many sites do you have hosted on your 2 ip's?

    Thanks
    Brad

Sure. Much less trouble, and cheaper. Also a lot more performance for my websites, because i KNOW what websites i host, and i don't have a reseller account together with other reseller accounts on the same server, hosting god knows what websites, that break the Mysql or ftp server in half :)

By managed i think you mean maintenance. It's premanaged.

About 15 for now. Planning on moving others to this server. I have them at about 5 different webhosts right now.

I tend to stay away from book sites... Never found any money in it.

I own an ISP, so the hosting part is easy. What I can tell you is that I have sites on multiple servers in and out of my own facility. It is a good idea to spread the love, so to speak. I would suggest multiple accounts or multiple dedicated servers or colocated servers of your own at several other facilities if you can justify it.

Customers that I have find it is typically easier to build their own machine, ship it to a colo and run multiple sites off their own machine. Advantages there are that you have no limit (outside of the machines capabilities) on the number of sites you can have.

I'd look at a dedicated server, or building your own and hosting it somewhere. Ultimately choose two hosts, build two servers, and use an rsync script to mirror/backup the data on each machine.

If you are not so technically inclined you could alway start small with some type of managed hosting or reseller hosting and ad sites little by little until you get large enough to justify the costs involved in dedicated and or colo.

Have to agree with the others.

The cheapest route is an account where you can host multiple domains in a single account. The downside to this is that if there is a server issue, all your sites are down.

Next step up is a reseller account. With that you normally get an allocation of disk and transfer and a limit as to how many accounts/domains you can create. You then spit the disl/transfer how you like/need it.

A VPS (virtual private server). This will give you a full "virtual" server within a larger server. You typically have full control at the server root level (linux) and you can customize it a lot more than a shared/reseller account. The downside (for most hosts) is that you actually have to manage the os etc, apply patches.

The most flexable (and expensive) is a true dedicated box.

    Just my 2 cents.

The book site was around way before I even knew about adsense. Some things we do for love, others for money.

yes having dedicated server is very nice

i recently them upgraded to php5.1.2 and mysql 5.0.18 on apache 2

the speed up on my sites (custom programmed in php5) is phenomenal,

i have 200 people on one of my forums that i programmed myself from scratch as we speak with the load of just 0.5 compared to same number of visitors when i was using Invision the load was averaging around 4!!

i use alot of advanced object caching in php5 to reduce the load on MySQL, something that alot of bulettin board systems out there lack

I have multiple accounts. You can do a search for hosts that offer unlimited domains hosting on a shared hosting or a reseller hosting account. this way you can host all on one account.

Can anyone here suggest a North American host with unlimited subdomains and ASP support for a reasonable price... say $30 or so? I ask because I have had alot of problems before and am currently on my 4th host. I haven't been overly impressed with any of them and am consequently looking again.

I also use a couple different hosts, each handling multiple domains. This helps spread the risk over a couple servers anyway. That way if there is a problem, I won't lose ALL my sites... (plus the benefit of very different IP's)

Reseller hosting all the way, I am telling you it is the best way to go. All the software to run it, multiple servers so all your sites do not go down and billable accounts.

I have 2 reseller accounts with different datacenters and companies plus a dreamhost account. If you want the info to the best reseller host I know, send me a PM.
