Hosting: How cheap is too cheap?

I am looking into getting a low cost host for my site. I've seen some hosting that is very cheap and wondering how their quality of service is.

http://www.1portfolio.com has hosting as low as $7.99 a year for 5GB/mo. and $19.99 a year for 50GB/mo. bandwidth. This seems really cheap compared to other hosts I've seen.
Has anyone had experience with 1portfolio hosting?

Any other suggestions for low cost hosts that are good?

Never trust a host that doesn't provide an address or a phone number for contact. They are probably just a reseller, not a real host.

zan23, pay attention to the bandwidth. 5GB/month is extremely low. Unless your site gets almost next to no traffic, you'll almost certainly need more than 5GB/month. Godaddy offers their basic economy hosting plan for $3.95/month with 250GB of bandwidth. If you're looking for a budget host that isn't hosted out of some kid's basement, I would go with Godaddy.

Use the codes on this page and get 10% off every purchase (I am no affiliate with the site; but I do use their codes everytime I order a domain; 10% off is quite a lot when you're order domains and hosts by the bunches :)):

    http://www.allonlinecoupons.com/st/go-daddy/

PS. If you don't already have a domain, register one with Godaddy and choose an Economy hosting plan at the same time. They'll knock off about $7 for the domai, for a total of $9-something, which gets you 2 months of Economy hosting and a domain name for 1 year. You can't get a better deal than that.

Dreamhost is very cheap - lots of bandwidth and space. A few people use it on here.

The problem with them is CPU usage, but they give you a 96 day money back.

    regards.

Sadly, the hosting market is flooded with resellers and underage kids trying to make a quick buck. All I can say, is don't go too cheap, especially if you're looking for quality. If you're on a tight budget, go with some of the bigger named companies.

I think I am going to go with siteocity hosting, I've heard good things about them from other DP members, and they aren't too pricey.

I don't need a lot of monthly bandwidth, as my site hasn't been too big just yet. The 5GB/mo. plan will work for now, as I averaged around 2.5GB/mo. using a free host previously.

A Small Orange is cheap but not too cheap. After numerous bad experiences in the past I only go with a host that is recommended to me by other folks who are using them.

In terms of cost, just think about what it costs you when your site is down. That certainly makes a reliable host worth paying for.

I pay $5 to $25 for my current hosting packages with three different hosts. All chosen from recommendations here at DP!

5Gb isn't that little, if you're not serving big files or image hosting you will be fine ..that is unless you're getting 100k hits a month.

$3.95/m for 250G ....trust me on this one, if you end up using 1/8 of that you WILL be contacted by them to have you moved to another hosting solution. That $3.95 plan is just a marketing tactic, no provider in the world can come anywhere near that kind of $ for the bandwidth or they would be loosing money faster then ENRON.

If your looking for a cheap host, i'd go with the recommendation of dreamhost. do a search for coupons and you can get 70% off a yearly contract.
