Hosting - does country matter?

    Hi, following: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=844501

Before I was leaning towards ixwebhosting, but i didn't like their control panel, and didn't even bother reviewing the review because they were all affiliate backed sites and there was no honesty.

i;m thinking of going with hostgator.

this is my first ecommerce site, and i don't really know what hosting company would be suitable, all my prevvious sites were static, simple sites.

does the country of where the hosting company or where their servers are located matter? for legal or other concerns?

    thanks

If you are not in the same country as your web host then if you need to sue them, it can make it a little difficult to do so. Thus look for companies who are honest. Most established web hosts are.

Another thing is that it is best to host your site in a location which is near your intended audience so that it would be faster for them.

On the other hand, if you are planning to host some contents which are in the gray area then you need to be sure that the laws in which the server is located does support it. Such as, it is illegal to host casinos and other gambling websites in the US especially if you enable betting thus hosting the site in some offshore countries like the Carribbean islands would be the way to go.

I provided USA web hosting for cheap if your interested, plus you can hold me to the honesty factor here. If I do something wrong, my reputation on DigitalPoint goes downhill...

    Hey Turri,

If you are located in the US, then it would be better for you.

It would be faster, and you would be supporting a company in your own country.

If you are located in Canada, or the UK, then I would suggest going with a company in your nation.

It would make it easier to reach (No overseas/long distance fees), and it would be faster for you and

    your customers.

    Good Luck.

Yes, country does not matter much these days unless you are dealing with legally questionable content. But some countries will be unable to compete with the server uptime of other countries, check that out before purchasing.

If you are going for e-commerce then I think it won't be affected by country.

But in my view, if you are oging to download website then local server is best to choose from as it gives high download rate then foreign servers.

Routing is whats important here. Some hosts offer great connectivity in some areas, and really poor connectivity in others.

If I were you, I'd simply look at one that provides the best overall worldwide performance (you can do this with online tools that pings an address from different checkpoints worldwide).

As per my experience location really does not matter with hosting a website as far as bandwidth is concerned. It depends on the connections the datacenter has for their bandwidth.

It matters from a SEO point of view. For example, if your server is located in, say, Germany, you will rank better on Google.DE.

I run an ecommerce site with over 3000 products. My advice is to find a reliable, well-known host in your home country. I wouldn't ever advise anyone to use Hostgator for any half-serious ecommerce site. Sure, it's okay if you're just selling a couple of products through Paypal or whatever, but never ever for a real ecommerce solution.

Remember though, the best aren't always the most expensive. Nor are the best the cheapest option.

It is best to find a server in the country you are targeting mainly. This is because your visitors will have a slightly faster load time and and better connection rate.

Best of luck with your new site.

Host your site on a free server, and look at the traffic stats
    if they are like
    50% USA/CA
    30% Europe
    20% Other
Then i would pick up a usa based (East Coast) Server

I would find a host with a datacenter located in or around Chicago IL, chicago is like a central hub. Huge data centers located in chicago. This is where I have the servers for my hosting company.
