I'm trying to find out what's a cheap dependable host for a beginner, and exactly what is the process you go through to startup a domain name?

I recommend either www.asmallorange.com or www.site5.com as a webhost -- both very dependable and solid companies. you need to buy a domain through a registrar, ( ie www.godaddy.com / www.namecheap.com / www.registerfly.com or other like companies). then point your DNS to the servers that the company provides to you and then you need to put up your pages into your webspace. That's about all there is to it really. then start marketing it :)

I've done all my marketing for free. I have a network of PR6 sites and it hasn't cost me a penny. So it's possible to do it all for free. It's taken me about 6 months to get around 5 PR6 websites. I just submitted to directories and did link exchanges, basically.

From AdSense, from affiliate networks (CJ), from other various advertising sources, yes.

I personally don't use shared hosting. I have a dedicated webserver through www.layeredtech.com which I completely manage myself and run myself. I use GoDaddy.com for my registrar though.

No, it's a dedicated machine which means the company still owns it, but I lease it and use it. I pay under $100/mo right now for it.

Your not in the red? 100 bucks a month seems steep, no?

$100/mo is a small price to pay, I don't even notice it with the revenue that comes in. I wouldn't even mind paying $250/mo for a better server, which I might do soon depending on how traffic treats me in this next google update.

I have a start-up business, but yes, I have other things on the side that I do -- this is not my primary focus of life right now.

Sure, that would be fine. But as always, feel free to post on the forum and you'll more likely get a faster response.
