Hosting and Seo

    I heard you shouldn't be hosting somewhere that has blacklisted ip's , link farms etc..

    I'll appreciate if someone explain how some of the above stuff affects search engine rankings for your site.

    And what other stuff should you keep in mind regarding search engine optimization while buying hosting for your site - shared or vps ?

    How do you find out that the server / company you are going to host with is not or would be penalized in the future for the above stuff ?
