I have been told its not a good idea to have domain registration and hosting together with the same company. Is this true, if yes why? I currently have hosting with a provider who will only do so if I register or transfer the domain to them. I would like to know why this might be an issue, hopefully someone will have experience of this. Thanks Paul
Its not good, because lets say the hosting company is going out of business; then instead of losing 1 thing, you end up losing 2 things. Especially, when you can't transfer a domain until its 60 days old, so you would end up losing it or struggling for it.
Not too mention if you sign up with a "not so hot" hosting company they may use this to their advantage...
there is no harm.. if you find those giant hosting company. lunarpages is offering free domain, and the domain is register with tucows... for free. so, basically you still got your free domain register with tucows, not with lunarpages. even the registra like registerfly can fall and however, you can still get the domain back by transfer it out.
Even through a big company I still think it's a bad idea (I even sell domains and think this). The problem is you buy a year of hosting and it comes with domain. That year is up and now you want to switch hosts well I've noted from customers this is a huge headache. The most recent one I remember is a customer had a dream host account and switch to us. He switched nameservers all of that then a month later his domain nameservers were switched because now he was being told he owed $150(another year of hosting). I think he eventually got his domain and only paid a domain fee but he was surprised to see such a charge just for his domain (so he thought anyways).
interesting I won't put any more into the combined account just as a precaution i was looking at putting another 15 domains with them. Thank you for your feedback everyone very useful.
user have to move out the domain 30 days before its expired. dreamhost is bit confusing cause of their coupon and discount scheme.
