hello, i host my site at hostgator 5 months ago, now i have facing a problem. i got mail from pingdom that, my website is down for 20 minutes weekly one times. can anyone please tell what's the problem? is hostgator is reliable for hosting? thanks in advance
20 minutes downtime in 5 months? That's still 99.99% uptime. Not really sure how you could be irritated by that. If it's happening every week, then yes, it's definitely an issue.
Most 'normal' reliability hosting services quote 99.9% uptime - that means sites can be down for 8.76 hours a year. Higher reliability from one service provider gets very expensive. I've often wondered if it's possible to use nameservers pointing to two different hosting accounts for the same domain? Never tried it but can't see why this wouldn't work? The chances of two different service provider sites going down at the same time should be extremely rare - especially if you pick ones using centres in different countries.
I am also hosting my sites (see in sig if u like) on hostgator for more than 6 months now and I don't have any issue with them. My sites are loading fast now and haven't seen any downtime in these 6 months. You should contact their support and ask about the issue you are facing, their support is very good.
Yesterday i contacted hostgator and x10hosting regarding backingup and site restorations. This is how the story went. I think everybody should read this http://galaxiess2.blogspot.com/2012/05/how-did-this-all-start-i-will-narrate.html
Any webhost can experience problems and downtime and 20 minutes is nothing. You should be glad it's not like one host I had once which was down like 50% of the time..
I like the way that Seafrontsteve converts uptime into an average of hours in a year. It is a nice way to put uptime into a diff. perspective. Most hosts will experience some downtime which will affect clients. It is something that does happen when dealing with machines. Although, hosts do take preventative measures to ensure that downtime is always minimal.
They are absolutely reliable. In three years, I faced downtime only once and that too was just for 10 mins only.
Your message is totally not related with this topic, do you know 99.99 uptimes is equal to 45minute/month and you expect a host without maintenace for 5month then you may consider move out from HostGator.
Hostgator in general, is a reliable and efficient webhost. And becos of their aggressive and generous commission in their afiliate offers, we saw a great number of sites helping to promote their hosting services. That helped to grow their business a lot over the last few years. If your sites have never encountered any major problems or issues, chances are, you will consider your webhost as one reliable and good with their uptime. However, the real test came when one of my client's 7 sites were infected with malware. Now a truly good webhost should have such counter-measures in place and would have discovered it within hours and took immediate actions to isolate, cleaned and restored, as top priority before notifying the affected customer. Not in this case, my client discoverred only after her site visitor alerted her about the malware warning and that her site was being flagged by search engines as a threat to the site visitors' computers. The next day, all her 7 sites were flagged and blacklisted by google. During that few days when it first affected to the day the sites got blacklisted, Hostgator either knows nothing about it or they just took care of their machines and did nothing to help their client's sites affected by it. Either way, it clearly showed to what extent one should consider reliability of a webhost to be truly reliable. As proven in this case, they failed when it comes to real emergency issues like this one. When she contacted them, they just told her to shut down all her sites......and???? disappointingly....that was it. Offered nothing to help. Is such a web host reliable when they did nothing to help when one of their customers' sites got infected with malware when the sites were hosted on their machines? By the way, she was with them for many years and always have high regards for them. That incident was like Hostgator dropped a bombshell on her and woke her up that I convinced and helped her to move all her sites out of Hostgator. When a webhost like Hostgator just keep on getting more customers as their ultimate goals while neglecting on their backend support, one can pray that nothing happen. The result will be the same as experienced by my client. With the increased business, one wonders are they capable and have the capacity to deal effectively with such similar incidents not just protecting their own machines but also their clients virtual properties as well. Now, may be we all should rethink about Reliability. When it comes to frontline and pre-sales marketing, all web hosts are the most friendly, cooperative, helpful and every assuring. Once you are in, things will always be different. So, bear this in mind and dont over estimate the reliability of a web host...regardless of how good or "reliable" you or most think they are. Take care and best wishes!
Beware of host gator. They advertise as if you'll be online within minutes and that its easy, but it might take a week. I paid them for service, but they never gave me access to cpanel for days. Even though I paid in full for a year, they asked for a photocopy of my credit card and passport and other IDs. It was a red flag. I've never had a host ask for financial information and passport info before. Live support had a 20 minute wait. I have no idea what their service is like once your already 'sold'. I'm sure it's even slower.
They are one of the top hosts available for today so if they have so much clients I wouldn't doubt about their reliability
I also faced the same problem. Don't know whether they are overselling or not. My sites became extremely slow! So I moved one site into a VPS in IntoVPS and the others to Site5! Site 5 is pretty good and didn't face a problem yet!
