I decided to go with hostupon. The reason; they provide a premium backup service for about 50 bucks a year. What are my actual options? I am desperate to secure my online content. I am not sure they provide a free restoration or not but a premium backup service is something that hostgator doesnt provide. Its a breeze of ease. I checked out for other website backup services. They were way cheaper than hostupon. However hostupon backs up the stuff every 5 days. Which direction I should take? The total cost is about $130 with a 20% off coupon code applied. Is this a ripp off?
regardless if a host provides a backup service or not, keep your own backups at home. For my own personal backups, i have an old computer at home running freenas that i save all my backups to. Additionally there are services such as: http://www.siteautobackup.com/ and these solutions can do backups automatically for you as well, its all automated and saved on their servers -> try the demo for yourself hostgator can restore your website for free if you provide your own backup, but if you restore from their weekly backup, it costs you $25 -> not ideal if you get hacked, as the backup data is up to 7 days old, and $25 is pretty pricey if you ask me. for me personally, i found that it was better to purchase a vps at sshvm.com ($2 per month) and i would perform the cpanel backup and have it saved via ftp to the backup server. This worked for me, but sadly i was unable to make this automated as a cron job but i was told it is possible to do so. As for $130 per year, if its for high quality hosting and they provide excellent support then imo its ok. Why not write a review on them in 3 months time and let us know how their servers and services performed for you.
hostgator confirmed that their backups are not guaranteed. As the hostupon service is premium I hope its reliable. The above price is for shared hosting + backups
well in that case something is wrong. $4 per month for 12 months, = $48 + $50 for backups = $98, your numbers are out by $30? You asked for other options, so at least look at the options i mentioned. There are alot of times ive heard of people having disputes with hosts and the hosts removed their sites, and then removed their backups as well. In addition, how many hosting providers go under each month or get flipped and sold to incompetent noobs? Check out the damage from the hostrail collapse. If your site and your backup is with the same company and you have no other backup then you run the risk of losing everything. Its good if you go for the premuim option, but you should still have a backup at home or elsewhere away from the company. FYI, i had reseller with hostgator for 6months. i never once needed a backup, but i too would rather have one and not need it rather then need one and not have one. @solidshellsecurity: how do you set that up something like that? (software etc) is it fully automated?
Also check out InMotion Hosting as they do automatic backups every 48 hrs. A lot of web hosts will do at least weekly backups of accounts. But you really should do your own backups too. Just set yourself a reminder once a week to do it.
I think there are other web hosting companies that are offering free automatic back ups with more cycles than hostupon does.
There are companies that offer R1Soft backups with the facility to restore your backups from your own cPanel itself. So you do not have to worry about taking backups yourself.
It's not wise to rely on free backups....had terrible experience. Even those automatic backup plans have failed me many times. The best is always back up your site every week depending on the number of changes or post you make.
