HostGator - the worst hosting provider ?!

Remember all those "UNLIMITED" packages from HostGator that made you say they are awesome. Well forget about them. I have a website and bought their biggest package of hosting. Everything was great until the site started reaching ~10k daily uniques, after that they started cutting all my resources. Loading time was increased by 50%, my site went offline for very long time...

Has anyone here experienced this ?

I've used them for years without any problems. Try contacting them with your concerns as possibly there is a reasonable explanation.

I've been using them for quite a long time and there haven't been any problem so fat.
You should talk to their live support.

    Good luck.

Well, I've already moved my sites on the provider in my signature. HostGator fails for me.

For starters, there is no such thing as unlimited hosting. As soon as you start using any appreciable amount of resources, your account is going to get cancelled...as you found out. ;)

As I have said many times, if somebody thinks they want to offer unlimited hosting, I have 5 or so dedicated servers that could use another home (i.e. your hosting) for nightly backups.

I believe that you should read their TOS first and then contact them in order to discuss the Terms.

I'd say roughly 75% of my new clients come from Hostgator or Bluehost. As long as they keep doing whatever is it they're doing, I'm happy. :D

I faced exactly same problem, they just disabled my all 100 websites just like that witohut notify me, sorry - they notified me by sending message to email address I hosted there and they just disabled them ((:), funny. I never advice their service to anybody who has traffic more than 5K unique visitors a day, my all websites was disabled for about 7 days, I lost a lot of money and all positions in Google. So then they moved me to the VPS but all the time have a problem with the memory and warning notification, VPS crashes etc. They are very expensive - I mean VPSes and Dedicated solutions, I have much stronger dedicated for 65$ on volumedrive. Hostgator is good for hobbyst websites but if you do a real business and have a lot of visitors stay away from them. You will loose a lot of money if you trust them. Don`t do it.

They offer "unlimited" and you can likely use a good chunk of bandwidth if the pages are static only (HTML, no PHP/MySQL), however otherwise you're using processing power which is likely the key resource that is limiting you at the moment. This could happen with any shared host, not just Hostgator, but the limits are likely higher with other providers that do not offer these bogus unlimited plans.

If you experience this with other shared hosts, likely a VPS should help out your cause as you can configure the VPS to tailor your needs.

Hostgator offers unlimited bandwidth but unfortunately not unlimited CPU . If your site takes up 80% of the CPU , it will adversely affect the other sites hosted on the same server so CPU utilisation is limited. Once you get 10K visits per day I think you should move to a VPS hosting atleast

If the VPS is crashing due to memory usage, you're certainly using way too much resources for shared hosting.

I never had such a bad experienced from Hostgator but a single problem I have had with them was about custom script. My custom script made their server to overload and caused many websites hosted under the same hood got many issues. I have been asked to remove those website nor script or the account may be terminated. I was angry in the first place but then I checked its usage and accept what they claimed about how resource hog my script is.

I had trouble with Hostgator as well and ended up having to change hosts. I have also had clients that have ended up switching because they were not happy with the service :(

My experiences with Hostgator is quite opposite from what you have had with them. Yes their "unlimited" is not truly but virtually. It has a large gap before its limited which most of websites could not reached. Their uptime is good compared among shared hosting companies.

My conclusion - They are not worst but you got for what you paid for

They are ass kissing noobs at the beginning so you can create a positive opinion about them, but after your site gets really big, they fail with everything. I've had to move tens of thousands of files, loose traffic, money, some of my readers. They are #1 if you don't even have good expectations from your site, otherwise it's a waste.

as it has been mentioned many time, there is no unlimited thing exists, if you fall into that feature and think, than its your own mistake, because its very easy and simple to understand, that if unlimited thing exists, than why in the world, webmaster want to pay for dedicated server and pay hundreds more than a shared plan.

Giving bad remarks to a host for such thing, is not host issue, its your own issue, when you choose a host, you have to keep in mind those feature really exists, what you want in cheap price.

I've tried to move to this hosting here. It's a cloud hosting and they offer great support + really big resources for websites.
