DreamHost did that to them selves in some poor attempt to write a hoax article to upset people, and why, I do not know, very bad taste on their part, as some people never finish reading and do not see the fine print, and this is not your fault, dreamhost is responsible for their own bad press. I think they write the article to make fun of EIG, and still not smart enough to pull it down, and you never know, maybe they are part of EIG, and just called it a hoax, and that is what they get for writing an article saying that they are EIG, btw, it is a hoax!

right.... i've managed many HostGator accounts (my clients' accounts) and downtime's a common issue. one site even had 2 weeks of downtime. is that okay?

lol and dreamhost isn't owned by EIG. maybe you should do a bit more research before posting things like that :)

I can tell you from personal experience Dreamshost sucks.. worse then HG.

I worked on a site that was on Dreamshost 3 mo ago they do not have cpanel just a buggy ghetto backend. The SQL password the client gave me would not work along with some other problems so I tried contacting support "live chat" nothing.. telephone on hold 20min then hang up.
-So I told the client get new hosting I am not wasting my time on this type of stuff.

He gets new hosting then the DNS redirect on Dreamshost would not change so I told him that is all his problem, he called, emailed and sent in tickets 4 days later Dreamshost answered and manually changed the name server.

it's not just hostgator, even ipage and all other unlimited hosts.

I have gotten my service suspended by ipage 2 years back and had to contact them through live chat to get back my files

huh? no cpanel? no file manager? ok, I do not need to know anything else about DH, they have been disqualified....
I have used KnownHost in the past, but did not really need them for just 1-2 domains, and you will pay a little bit
more for them, but in the end, you are getting qaulity, not something wearing a mask that makes you want to scream....

and that explains why DH is cheap, if they do not use cpanel, then they can save money, and save resources since cPanel does take a good amount of resources, and I have been working with cPanel since I was born (j/k) and I just can not imagine working with another system, so i may pay just a little bit more for cpanel, but will be happy.

People say that there are other panels better then cpanel, after all, why do you need any options? Your only goal is for your domains to be up, right? They are probably right, why do you need a resource hog like cpanel? Like the layout? love the options that you never really use? or would you rather use a light-weight panel and pack your vps with as many domains as you can? In the end cpanel does not impress your buyers as your buyers can not see cpanel; you only impress yourself.

    Quality vs Quanity

DreamHost has a free trial period, if you cancel within a week, then you are done with them; And I am willing to give them a try, at least once, and they do not have to impress me with not having cPanel. They can impress me by showing me that they can keep my domains online, that is more important, and if not, then I always know how to get over to knownhost...
Some people love cpanel, and to be honest, it is nother more then glitter, but they seem to like the shine of cpanel, even though they will never use 99.9% of the options that cpanel has to offer, and others can do without out it, and I guess these people are the smart ones, their only goal is keeping their domains online while reducing their overall resources, and I have to admit, if it was not for cpanel, then probably would have no issues running 20 domains with HostGator.
bottom line is not whats best, it is what is best for your personal choice.

My concern at this point with DH is that lack of response time.
I sent a ticket to them 24 hours ago. If you are just running a bumble
bee project site then that is no big deal, but if you have a growing
of domains in your portfolio, then timely support is a must.....
(unless you want to guess on how long your sites maybe down)

While many decent web hosts have gone big box style with EIG buying up more than a few there are still good web hosting options available. Many still choose their web host based on paid directories or other sources where the same names come up again and again. Look deeper when you are choosing your new provider. Many excellent mid sized providers run some terrific companies where the customer comes first attitude is still in play.

Any hosting provider ( Hostgator is not an exception) will be suitable for a customer till you overuse the give resources according to your hosting package or till you overload the server.

In case you have a VPS server, nobody will pay attention to your server.
