Hostgator or Dreamhost?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by Dantes, Aug 18, 2006.

    Hi,

I read all the recommendations in this forum about choosing a host, so I decided to go with Hostgator or Dreamhost. But witch one should I choose? Dreamhost is cheaper and is offering more for less, but Hostgater is more reliable.

    Any suggestions?

    DreamHost over sell BY MILES!

they offer too much at too low cost, just trying to sell as many accounts as possible (by the way i can give you a promo code if you need it that knock like 80% off DreamHost)

And they also have terrible downtime : http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/

But i like them because they quote me so much and i pay them next to nothing, get what you pay for i guess!

i have been with dreamhost for about a month and there has been downtimes a few times, usuall no more than ten minutes that besides the ugly control panel and crappy stats, dream host is pretty good, offers alot of speed and is the only host that i can host a decent size forum on for 10 dollars a month .....

besides downtimes i would recommend them for a new site

If you plant to run scripts you may wand to avoid DH. They force all PHP to run as cgi. The also have problems with RSS feeds.

if you want a dedicated server and know your stuff go to the source that hostgator uses they get their servers from http://www.theplanet.com you can save big money by going direct.

both are good, though hostgator has a slight edge. I would say base your decision depending on which applications/scripts you are going to run on the site:)

theplanet is the most popular as many popular hosts are with them - and as blademaster says, should you need a dedicated server, go direct provided you know your stuff :)
