Hostgator is slower than sin..

Don't get me wrong, I think HostGator hosting is decent, but when you register a new domain with them, it takes FOREVER for them to propagate the DNS so your domain name is live.....48 hours seems like a long time especially when other hosts I've used will have it up and running in a matter of hours. Anyone else use HostGator and have this problem. I'm going on 24+ hours and still waiting for my new domain to be live.

Why don't you just buy from a registrar and change nameservers? that's what i don't understand...

For domain register you should with domain firms. Like namecheap, godaddy, moniker.

hmm, my school usually has slow DNS updates

namecheap normally takes around 24 hours for me(takes less than an hour in the rest of the world :p)

but godaddy seems to be pretty fast, i'd say 12 hours or so.

of course, if i instantly change nameservers, then my school can pick it up right away, otherwise it'll take 24 hours or so

Because it wasn't any cheaper to purchase elsewhere and I was getting a hosting plan with HostGator anyway...I didn't know that they take a damn month to change nameservers...lesson learned I guess.

I always get my registrations instant with namecheap.

their nameservers updating can be pretty fast also.

Hmm, do a WHOIS and see what the domain name's nameservers are. If they
are the correct ones, then go to dnsreport.com to check for any possible DNS
    problems.

You seem to think it takes forever for Hostgator to update the nameservers if
it's possible there might be other factors at play, especially if you don't check
    them all out.

Well get this...turns out that 24 hours after I purchased the domain it was still showing as an available domain name because Host Gator didn't register the domain....so someone else registers it before HostGator decides to get around to it, so I lost my name.

I since purchased another one and just changed the DNS and it's working well now.

Sorry to read that happened. From what I've personally observed so far over
a year or so, that risk seems greater when dealing with a reseller instead of
an actual registrar when it comes to domain registrations itself.

Unfortunately even registrars aren't necessarily immune to that.

Yeah...pain in the butt...but I found a solution that should work ok.

I guess Acid394 was right...I should have just registered it with a registrar in the first place. Oh well lesson learned.

don't panic, the propogation time varies even with one registrar

I've had godaddy propagated for me in minutes many times, and then the next take over 24 hours... not always the same

they do take a lot of time to register the domain itself... some ppl have had bad experiences with domain registration through HG earlier also...
