Hi All, Just signed up with HostGator.... Not what I'm used to, coming from DreamHost's control panel. With HostGator, you have to have a primary domain associated with the account? E.g., Domain1.com? Why? What if I get rid of that domain later? THEN, when you add additional domains (e.g. domain2.com), cpanel automatically creates 3 things: domain2.domain1.com domain2.com/domain2 -and finally- domain2.com (once you change your name servers) Why the heck would their system bother creating the first 2? Seems very pointless and inefficient....... All I need is domain2.com I don't know if it's a hostgator or cpanel thing... but it's very non-intuitive! The customer service rep suggested I restrict access to the first 2 via .htaccess, but all I really want is for hostgator to not enable those 2 in the first place. Thoughts? Or perhaps I'm just doing something wrong?
i believe this is a cpanel thing, but I could be mistaken. I have hosted with three different companies including Host Gator, all with cpanel, and this is what happens when i do an addon domain, so it's probably cpanel.
yeah that is a cPanel thing. If you had a reseller account with HG you could create them in their own containers, but since I think you are using the shared option it creates all your 'addon domains' in the same container as your primary domain name. (Also make billing and tech support easier)
