You can do either, but if you choose the right host. My question to you is when your signature is advertising a shopping cart software why you would be asking that.

okay but from the question it looks like spam. To tell you the truth as a web developer and as a host i would rather people decide on there own which cart to use. We personally like prestashop. Free opensource, and under constant development.

Thanks @JJi have edited the post, hope it will not look spam now, your answer is exact what i want to ask from people that on criteria/pattern they decide to select the hosted cart

I would prefer without hosting and then at least you arent tied to the cart developer for everything. However if problems occured at least all faults would be with one company

I would like to go for a hosted store but I want my service provider to allow me customization... I find them less expensive and they require no maintenance from store owner.

I would go for own hosting and setup the cart as I would have full access to get whatever customization I need.

if you have money, you'd better have your own hosting. if you use magento, you'd better use dedicated host, if you want to save money, and you use zen cart, you can use share hosting.

Hosting your own will be the best solution long term. If you go with hosted solution you're kind of stuck in it and depending which you could you may not have many options for upgrading, etc.
