Yes, you can host the sub-domain on another server. You need to create a new account using the sub-domain name on a second server i.e. blog. domain .com and then add an A record for the sub-domain on server where DNS of the main domain are hosted. The 'A' record need to be specified in the DNS zone of the main domain i.e. domain .com. If the name servers of the main domain are pointing to the first server, edit the DNS zone of the main domain and add the following entry

    That's it.

Is this possible with any shared hosting web provider, or do you need to run your own servers? How would you do this using shared hosting?

In case, you have a Shared hosting account, you will have to purchase another shared hosting account to host the sub-domain separately. If you have a Reseller account, you can add the sub-domain as a main account from your WHM Reseller login.

Let me try again, lets say I have five hosting accounts with 5 different hosting companies and I want to point a sub-domain to each different site. Is this possible?

Maybe it would help with what I am trying to do. I am going to be hosting a site that is on the basis of Craigslist. What I want to do it to have a different sub domain for each region. I would also like to host each mysql on a different web host. I know I can just do a hyperlink to each region, but at the same time I want it to show my domain name in the address bar. It is that easy. An example region.domain.com, rather then a different domain.
