homegrown vs O.S.

I'm a bit new to CMS systems, having just edited articles manually via FTP in the past. For my latest creation I put together a CMS of my own, just a simple setup, enough to let me add/edit pages in a secure online interface without messing with FTP. I'd like to know if I should switch to using a popular open source solution instead.

What are the benefits? At the moment it's just me using the system, and I need to allow PHP in various pages (well just the homepage at the moment as it has some automatically updating content). It's a hotel guide by the way in case that makes a difference.

I think it's best I make an informed decision right now while the site is in its infancy rather than face a switchover when I have '000s of pages in the system.
