Hi all, I have some home videos of my kids playing around that I need to make a backup of on a external HDD I purchased. I heard it has longer gevity then any dvd does?

Anyways I have tried DVD rippers and just copying and pasting the files onto my computer but it always comes up with a error or the DVD ripper outputs bad quality even on the highest quality settings.

Money is not object when it comes to my kids so what is the best ripping software out their so I can try it out. Money is not object on this sort of thing.

You don't mention what source you're using other than "home videos"...

If you're trying to archive a DVD, then just create an image using Nero or something, and store the image on your external HDD. Then if you ever want to make a copy for friends/family you can just load up the image and burn it.

When you say image what exactly does that mean? Does it actually copy the files or will I still need the original DVD to copy from for the family? I have heard of Nero, is it the best for this sort of stuff? As I said money is no object when it comes to my kids.

An image file is basically your DVD disc saved as 1 big file. Once you have the image, then you can burn DVDs using only the image - no need for the actual disc.

To create an image using Nero, you just put the disc in, select DVD copy and then chose 'burn' to image instead of a blank DVD. You can then use this image file to burn a disc at a later time.

Nero is simple, and the image files it creates are so common that in 10 years time you should still be able to find software to burn the image.
