I bought a site and thought i was transfering it over alright. I started changing the website up and it appears I have two websites.. http://myfederalloanconsolidation.com/ and http://www.myfederalloanconsolidation.com/ The second one is the one I started changing around. Why are they both not the same.
What you are experiencing is a "canonicalization" issue in reverse. All sites have the possibility of being "www" or not. In SEO, this is an issue because the link urls may be different from the preferred homepage address. Most webmasters resolve this problem by redirecting the less desirable address (usually non-www) to the desired one. There are many ways to do this, Cpanel hosting offers a simple interface. Also, Google's Webmaster's Tools offers an option to set the preferred address. Since you are making changes at www, you should probably just 301 the "other site" to that. Be sure to back up your data first in case you need the orginal files for some reason.
Hi, Actually, what probably was happening was that your browser had example.net. point to the original server due to DNS caching while example.net was not cached so when browsed to www.example.net. it received the updated records and loaded the site at the new server. While the issue amanamission is important for SEO it was not causing the symptoms you reported.
