just one hour after registering my first webhosting account at hostgator and began writing some content for my site i got this email from hostgator.

Thank you for your order with HostGator.com!

In order for us to continue with the account setup, please respond to this ticket with a scanned copy of a Photo ID such as as a passport, or drivers license. In addition to a photo ID, please include a scanned copy of the credit card that was used in your account purchase (assuming you purchased a hosting account with a credit card). For security purposes you can mask off all the digits of the card number except for the last 4 digits.t for my site i got this email from hostgator ....is this a mandatory for everyone who buys webhosting from them or its just me?...........what should i do now? i wanted to complete this site today now i spent all my time submitting complain tickets ..which i havent got an answer back yet..

You were flagged for possible fraud, or come from a high-risk country, and they simply want to verify you actually are who you say you are.

What should you do? If you want to keep hosting with them, you need to do what they request. You'll need to submit the requested information.

Assuming that you said you used your brothers credit card which is in the United States, I will assume that you might not be in the United States. A US credit card and a foreign IP address may raise some flags. It should be resolved quickly. Nothing sick about not accepting fraudulent orders.

I bet that's exactly what happened. Your IP needs to match very closely to the billing address (most companies I know use +-100 miles). Using your ISP and his information is absolutely 100% going to flag the order as fraud. That makes it look like somebody out of the country stole credit card details of somebody here in the US and is trying to use it illegally.

Hostgator carries out a lot of checks and I've this happen to my fellow web designer friends. As long as you have nothing to worry about, it should be easy to sort out. Sometimes, it's easier to send the documentation and 4 digits of your credit card as it will help you in the long term

thank you all for the replies .. i talked to hostgator agent and asked him to cancel my account as my brother is on holiday and couldnt be able to send me the required document ..then i registered new account with my debt card with the same domain name that i registered before as hostgator agent suggested to me ..couple of hours later i got mssge from hostgator asking me again to send document in order to get my account activate.d this really made me angry as the ip address and my home address match each either i still dont know why they are making things hard for me . im now thinking registering new hosting account at brain host hope its better than hostgator.

It really doesn't matter much. You might be from a country or a region where they might be experiencing higher no.of fraud cases. So, just send the necessary proofs and get the thing done with it. Since, you used your debit card what's the fuss in providing details which they are asking you ? You really don't need your brother again for this, do u ?

There are hell-a-lot of other companies lying around, you could try your luck with them but remember some might still ask ur personal details at your new host as well.

I was also having similar problem. I am from India, and as you know, Paypal doesn't allows us to pay from our account balance. So, I have to ask one of my client to pay the hosting charge. And after that they asked me to send the id proof documents. So I have scanned my driver's license and sent them. But they asked to send my client's also(who made the payment for me). And since I don't want to get my client irritated because of this issue and don't want to lose further works from him, I directly contact HostGator. And they suggested me to register at their sister concern in India. That is, HostGator India. I didn't know that they have a wing in here. Now I am a customer of HostGator India :)

@OP, I guess you don't even the know the digit of fraud cases which happened in most host. You couldn't blame HG as they are doing their job to make sure the transaction is secure and known by the card holder. Think again, the credit card was issued in United State and then credit was use in Israel but the card owner was still in US then do you think its make sense? Even if you purchase few server from there, they will still ask for your credit card verification.

To avoid this kind of cases, apply a credit card of your own. :)

Hostgator sent me the same thing. I bought hosting and they denied me access for a week before they got more personal info. It raised red flags that they'd request my passport and credit card info. They might have done that since I'm working abroad at the moment. But after corresponding with them and wasting lots of time, they ended up canceling my service and refunding me anyway. It sounds risky, I don't trust them.

Their whole fraud protection thing is a pain, not worth it imo.

OP, sounded like he came here to spam one thread then left. As if he did not response more than 2 week, probably he was here to kick off HG images
