Hey I was just wondering if someone could give me some advice on keeping positions in search engines. My site is on the first page of google for the phrase 'premium wordpress themes' despite the fact that my site is only around two weeks old. The phrase isn't a really highly contested one which would explain why my site has got up so quickly and although I haven't seen a great deal of traffic from google (around 120 page views from it in the past few days) it's good quality traffic as the people coming from google are, I'm assuming, genuinely interested in buying from my site and I have noticed a good increase in sales recently. Now, because my site is young and I haven't got a great deal of backlinks I'm worried that I may suddenly drop off the page which would obviously harm my sales. What route should I take to make sure that I stay well ranked and perhaps even build on this position. Should I quickly build up a large amount of backlinks, I've heard flooding links to your site early on can sometimes be a bit iffy with SERP's - would I maybe be best of just going on the way I have been and taking the chance of falling off the first page? How likely is it that I actually will fall off? As you can tell I am quite new to all this SEO work and although I have been reading through the threads here at DP quite a lot I thought some direct advice may be best so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great
The following things will help you hold your search engine positions. - Keep adding new content. - Keep getting quality backlinks to your site. - Submit atleast 1 article a month to top article directories. - Submit your sites to relevant directories.
thats excellent job for a two weeks old website, keep up adding relevant content and quality backlinks
Well, I wouldn't worry about getting too many links to the site too fast - that is really a worry... Getting QUALITY back links is the key... Adding content is dandy and all, but if you are already Pot 10 I would grab a few links here and there and move on to some new terms/targets It is also important to have a sense of ROI about things.. meaining, if the term is not producing substantial traffic that converts, don't spend a great deal of time on it... If it's time or money, it's an investment - we seek to chase the terms that have the best payback... spending 6 months on a terms that brings in 50 uniques/week may not always be the best call This is why the KW/Phrase research and targeting phase is soooooo important
Is it true that if Google find too many new links for your site then you will get penalised for potentially being a spammer?
only if you get TOO many links over a very short time. dozens of backlinks over a few days should be OK
NO – it is completely false. If that were the case U could simply go whack a bunch of links to a competitor site and tank them – known as GoogleBowling For more on this and other silliness see Bad SEO Providers and Google Penalties and Filters – that should straighten it out for you. Anyone that would get a flag for link spamming would almost CERTAINLY be running an automated link spam application. That level of spamming can't generally be created by hand or a legitimate webmaster
New Content will definitly help, that would be the best thing to concentrate on. Update every 1-2 days.
Thanks a lot for the advice everyone, really given me some good points to think about I add a new article to my site probably every other day on average so adding content shouldn't be a problem. I think building some quality links will have to be my next step. As well as premium themes I also offer free wordpress themes, which contain back links to my site so as these are being downloaded quite a lot I think I will definately need to create some good quality links to maybe balance things out a little. Thanks again for the advice, I'll work on those back links to secure my position then I guess I'll move on to working on moving up the 'free wordpress themes' search results. No doubt that will take a lot longer mind!
Hmmm, sometimes lesser link building may give you the possibility to get higher in SERP because some keywords you typed in your Title in Articles/Directories may affect your SERP rankings. Using your own keywords, the directory site you have submitted may use your keyword and may go higher than your site
Let's hope your competitors are not reading this thread. You seem to have found a good keyword because of the ROI you mentioned. You will do ok to keep the spot as long as you SEO. If your competitors start to appear, then you will have a hard time to keep the position, so it is not just your part to SEO, but their competitiveness affect your position also. You basically need to SEO better than them. That's the key. The difficulty is dependent on how much they SEO with the same keyword. Right now, you don't have any competitor so with a little SEO, you will do ok. But I would recommend that you should SEO for your future position at SERPs now. Even though you can keep the spot with a little SEO, it's better to dominate with the keyword now before your competitors appear. This is exactly what I did on one of my sites. I held #1 for some months until Microsoft stole it. (currently #2 ) Increase quality backlinks, but don't over do it. If yours is new, you need to be careful for being dumped in sandbox.
One way to check your competition is to go to google, and type in: allintitle: premium wordpress themes There are only 12 results for this search, but over 20,000 for free wordpress themes, and 87,200 for wordpress themes. This most likely means that you have very little competition for your keyword phrase, which is why you ranked so well, so quickly. Like you first thought, you're going to have a harder time getting in top 10 for free wordpress themes. Hope this helps, MR
Well I'm now on the first page of google for free wordpress themes too, now just got to work on moving higher up the page Thanks a lot for your help everyone, really been appreciated
