I have never held a contest on any of my sites before but was thinking of having a monthly drawing for a gift card. Everyone who makes a purchase would be eligiable for the drawing.

Has anyone done anything similar? Results?

Also what if anything should you post about rules?

I just did a contest on my site this month for a $25 gift card to best buy.
I got a positive responce from the members and it generated a lot of excitement in the forums. Definitly something I'd recomend.

I'm even thinking of upping the next one to $100.

You should definitely post up rules.. so there won't be any cheating.

Also, what is your site about? How will people win the item? Is this for a forum?

Everyone who makes a purchase (no purchase necessary) are you in US?

Most contest to be legal have to be open to everyone (of legal age). You can't limit the prize to someone who buys something. You can have a giveaway and restrict it to members if you have a member based website.

I am running a contest. $1,000 to the most popular article. So far, I have not been impressed at all. I hope it's not a waste of money.

I was thinking about doing something similar. My site doesn't sell anything, and is really just a basic gaming forum, but I think having a contest will encourage new users. At first, I was thinking of going all out and offering a Nintendo Wii ($250), but then I realized that I will probably have to match, and top myself with each contest. So, I may start small with a $50 game or something.

Did you read that somewhere? I don't have a member site, and visitors don't sign up for a newsletter or anything. I only wanted to offer this to people who actually purchased the product.
