Ivan Dixon, an actor, director and producer best known for his role as Kinchloe on the 1960s television series "Hogan's Heroes," has died. He was 76.

U.S. Staff Sgt. James Kinchloe on "Hogan's Heroes," a satire set in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Kinchloe, in charge of electronic communications, could mimic German officers on the radio or phone.

Loved the show and watched much of the reruns when I was "younger" in the '70's. I loved the show.

Bob Crane who played Col. Hogan was murdered in a Scottsdale, Arizona motel room in 1978, which remains officially unsolved to this day. There was a movie about it in 2002 "Auto Focus"

Richard Dawson who played Corporal Newkirk went on to host the Family Fued from 1976 until 1985, and then again for one season in 1994. He also played an evil game show host in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Running Man.

Dixon spent many years (1970–1993) behind the camera directing television shows and movies such as Trouble Man, The Rockford Files, The Bionic Woman, Magnum, P.I. and The A-Team.

He played a doctor and leader of a guerrilla movement in the controversial 1987 ABC miniseries Amerika, set in post-Soviet invasion Nebraska. Perhaps his most memorable scene was his dramatic rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner", which had been banned by the puppet government led by Robert Urich.

No wonder I don't remember him in anything else, he was 35 when he started doing Hogan's Heroes!

Wow, he has a lot of 60's TV show credits, but they are mostly for one epsiode. So, he spent a decade playing bit roles and then hit the jackpot. Persistance really did pay off for Ivan. :)

That's sad he was a good actor and it was a really good show.

    Now that's really odd.

Yes it is odd. There are certain groups who feel it was Cranes partner(John Carpenter) who killed him, yet, could never prove it in court.

There was an interesting film made about Crane. Its called Auto Focus. It was made in 2002, starring Greg Kinnear, Willem Dafoe and Rita Wilson.

Auto Focus is a great movie and William Dafoe did a great job playing John Carpenter.

Bob Crane was an interesting character but his wild partying undermined his career. Bob Crane actually left his wife and married 'Clinks' secretary in real life.

Ivan Dixon and Richard Dawson were the most sucessful of the Hogan Horeos alumni.
