Jesus never encouraged any kind of murder. Turn the other cheek was his message. Love your enemy. Also, give your wealth to the poor (social programs) and give unto ceaser what is ceasers (pay your taxes). Conservative republican Christians hate those bits of Christs teachings ... or then try to skew them to fit their "love of money" lifestyle.

Jesus wasn't a forceful individual. He didn't tell you to pay taxes to support a social program, he told you that you love your neighbor so much that you don't even care to see your good deeds as good deeds...you purely do it out of compassion.

Stop trying to annoint him to modern liberalism (he had nothing to do with politics). Jesus wanted people to choose that path, not to be forced into it. I hate how people politicize Jesus...the man by himself was a great guy, and only his 'statesmen' followers and mind-created followers screw-up a rather common sense perspective.

 

Actually, the phrase “turn your cheek”, in context, doesn’t mean quite what most people today think it does.

If a man struck you with the back of his hand in Jesus’s day, he was degrading you, relative to himself. He was asserting his superiority to you, but striking someone with the palm or cup of your hand was only done to equals. Some of the social stigma of the back handed slap even persists today. If you were struck by the back of someone’s hand, Jesus advised, invite him to strike your other cheek, so that rather than debasing you, they would either acknowledge that you were their equal or better, or they would back down, thus causing them to loose face. It’s not a teaching of pacifism, but in a pragmatic way to defeat a social opponent, in a way that is better than just fighting that opponent physically.

And the phrase of “Give unto Ceaser what is Ceaser’s” is only part of a larger phrase: “Give unto Ceaser what is Ceaser’s, and give unto God, what is God’s.”, which is part of a lesson that says that if you devote your heart and soul to god, giving Taxes to a government does not mean that you are worshiping that government, or it’s head.

And Charity is not Charity if it is forced upon you by law. Many Christian republicans will argue for lower taxes and welfare programs, but will themselves give to a beggar on the street, or to a privately funded charity. Those privately funded charities don’t have to deal with the government bureaucracy of programs like FEMA, and can instead devote the money, time, and effort to using the donated money to do the largest amount of good.

 

Good post Josh. I was not aware of the larger understanding regarding "turn the other cheek." I know it is a favorite of liberals to use and I've always countered that it does not mean "lay down and die" which is often the context I find liberals wishing it were true.

I must say, I'm impressed and learned something new today.

Who calls him a Christian terrorist? I never heard such a thing. Hitler never claimed to be Christian. He was much more likely to be a Socialist/Communist/atheist which most of the major genocidal leaders/ mass murders this past century or so were. Islam and Nazi Germany are however identical in many ways including the all consuming hatred for Jews.

Sounds like you just wanted to link Christian and Hitler together if possible.
