definately a great way....look at stacounter for ideas. Anything like that....a built in calculator...or any useful widget can be a source of backlinks.

For international site, we have to figure out innovative and new idea for widgets.. @ SAW, it is true. now I'm thinking to put hit counter service for country people in our language. There is no such service like this in our language. May be my country people will enjoy hit counter too much for their personal sites with their own language.
Hit counters are so 1996. Why would people want to lessen their site by putting such a widget there? Perhaps you can make it reverse video, flashing, with smilie face emoticons all around the counter, too. For it to do you any good from an SEO ranking perspective, the counter widget is going to need a hyperlink in it pointing to a page on your site with link text containing a keyword phrase you're targeting on the page the hyperlink points to. How are you going to accomplish that? I wouldn't put a visitor counter widget on my site that contains a hyperlink on it that points to some other site with link text like "mortgage loans" or "forex trading" or any other keyword phrase from whatever vertical your site happens to be in. I think you're wasting your time. Probably the only "takers" you'll get are kids wanting to add it to their MySpace page.

actually hit counter service provider will not be matched to music or real estate site.. web or soft development companies may put some such services because it is related to their site. many companies really used such tricks. they used the noscript tag in end of the code.
