History of SEO?

    Hello,

I recently had a post asking what the future of SEO may look like. Now I have a similar one, but this time, I am hoping to get a glance of what things looked like in the past from some of the people who have been involved for years.

If you take a look back 5 years ago, or even more, were the backlinks as important? Was is still primarily content dictating where you would be on the natural search? When was AdWords and AdSense introduced?

What is different today than 5 years ago?

The reason why I am asking is because I have been out of the business for a while. When I was working on E-commerce sites, there was not as much emphasis on the things that I read about today. So, I am wondering if we were just neglecting some key areas or if things have changed.

    Thanks!

10 years ago it was more about the keywords on your page. Google put a stop to that.

5 years ago everyone was trading links. Google put a stop to that.

Lately it's about buying crappy, detectable links from the navigation of sites that are barely relevant to your own.

2 years from now, outbound links in the navigatio will be worthless. You will either have to obtain links naturally or buy links from an undetectable, robo-secure text link sytem (like what I've been working on for months).
