Hiring Designer & Programmer --- HOW?

I want to start a site somewhat similar to the current freelance sites out there. I want to use a purchased freelance script as the base, but there will be extensive modifications to the script. In the past, I've just hired one person to do both programming and design; now I'm considering hiring different people for each job.

I'm just a little confused about how everything is going to workout. Should I just hire a designer and tell them how I want everything to look and then just leave the programmer to manipulate the script to work with the design? Should the designer and programmer be hired at the same time so they can consult with each other? I am neither a programmer or designer ... I know just enough to run my websites ... so maybe none of this make sense. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,
You should tell them what do you need. Write about your project, etc etc...

A programmer needs a layout to work with, so I suggest to hire a designer first.

Thanks for the replies. I guess my main concern is what if I have the designer include functions/options that is hard for the programmer to integrate into the script.

I don't think you need to worry to much about the. If the programmer you hire is good as his job, then he should already know how to deal with integrating functions/options into a script. It's something most programmers have to deal with.

I say this a lot over at SitePoint, though not as much as I used to do. Let the designers design, while the developers develop. However, if you can, get them to talk to each other, and make sure they're both involved in the process. Not all designers know how to properly design for the Web, and you don't want to burden your developer with a print designer thinking he can design for the Web using print techniques.

Thanks a lot. I'm currently talking w/a top rated designer at eLance and I'll be sure to look for a programmer as soon as we get the details worked out.
