For example, some individuals get â€œaddictedâ€ to chat rooms. These type of people are often lonely and have low self esteem and they see the chat room as a way to express themselves and find â€œstrangersâ€ who they might never have met in real life. They soon find themselves on the Internet at odd hours and use it for longer periods. This can often lead to long-term effects not only for their health but also if they have a partner they might feel â€œsnappyâ€ towards them. Moreover, research suggests that Internet addiction is having a big affect on marriages. There are now more divorce rates than before.

Another way people can be addicted to the Internet is if they find someone online. For example, some teenage girls meet strangers on the Internet. These people can be whoever they are and can give false details. This can lead to a big risk in child safety and therefore, have a big effect on the dangers of meeting people off the Internet. For example, websites such as Facebook and Myspace are prime examples that need to be monitored for dangerous activities.

Therefore, the way to overcome Internet addiction is to exercise more and spend more time with your real friends. I would also recommend you travel a lot and read books and watch TV on a regular basis. The more you use the Internet the more attached you become to this â€œnew mediaâ€. If you are going to use the Internet then use it for 1 hour and then take breaks. However, avoid going on chat rooms as it can always lead to addiction and can sometimes be hard to control.
