High Traffic vs. Low traffic Techniques

I've been dealing with low traffic sites for a longer time.. They bring in me good revenue because of their good CTR, lets say about 5-15%

Lately I've gotten a high traffic website. I tried placing ads, especially using my high CTR techniques and they not-suprisingly don't convert as good, I'm guessing because the users are wanting to stay on the site and be more entertained.

I've helped other websites optimize their ads to get a 2-5%, but for me its just not working.. Especialy since I need tons of clicks for my 5cents CPC to make some descent money.

Please tell me your guys input, and whats best way on high traffic sites.. Like whats the basic technique, banner ads, what do you think.

    Thanks

Can you post your link so that we can see where your adsense ads are placed??

Is the link the one on your sig? I think the placement on the homepage is quite seamless. But I'm no expert of course.

For me there´s one important thing that I´ve learned from Joel Comm´s book. Show adsense as part of your content. Don´t let adsense to shout "Hey DON´T CLICK ME... I´M A BANNER" :)

    Simply but true.
    Rgds, :)

Without a URL, it's basically impossible to help you out ;)

True, but honestly you should employ the same techniques.

For example, I don't see any ads on your home page, so of course you're not going to be getting many clicks ;)

I just don't understand why the techniques you use on a high traffic site would need to be any different from low traffic techniques? In most cases:

    More Traffic=More Clicks

High traffic sites = users using your site and enjoying it,, they dont want to leave.

Low traffic = spam sites with "ads" which look like information links.

That doesn't even make sense. There are plenty of sites and blogs on that internet that are useful and enjoyable, but that doesn't mean they have high traffic. And there are plenty of MFAs that get a lot of traffic, but they still suck.

I think the distinction you're trying to draw is between "real" sites and MFAs, not between the amount of traffic.

Yes Real Sites and MFA is a better way to put it.. Exactly what I mean..

What would you say about adsense techniques for these now, you agree its a lot harder wont you?

Honestly, I've never made a MFA site, so I can't really compare.

All the web sites I have are blogs, and in my opinion, it is fairly simple to add effective AdSense to these sites. I normally use a leaderboard and skyscraper, and I've had good results.

What is that "Powered By Google" thingy? Seems like, I haven't been following all the new features released by Adsense. Does that thing pay you (is it the "CPA" ads?)

I understand what you are talking about. Ex: Forums and Photo Galleries, where people keep doing stuff on your website and are less likely to click Ads (CTR < 1%)

I would do a couple of things. Place a leaderboard or a 468X 60 banner (whatever fits in) right after a news article or a forum post has ended. This has increased the CTR for me a lot. Ofcourse you would blend the Ad with the site colors.

Second thing would be link units. I have used horizontal link units under my menu and they work well. I haven't tried vertical link units as I didn't have any vertical menu. It would be fun to see which one converts better.

If your users are non-tech savy you can always promote Google Pack and Firefox with banner/text emphasising on computer security. I have tried firefox banner, but it didn't work for me, I'll try text links for the firefox referal.

If you are talking about using Google Adsense adn getting people to click then you need to not make any nooby mistakes. For instance, if you site is about solving problem X, then don't actually provide the solution in your entertaining articles! Make sure your articles are unique and of high quality, but make them so that they don't really solve any of the visitor's problems. Then the visitor will get a bit more than halfway through your article and think, "This is great, but it's not giving me the exact answer I want...Oh, look at that link (it's an adsense ad), that looks like what I am looking for...Click!"

This is really how it happens.

If you are working Google Trends keywords then don't add adsense at all! It will never convert well no matter what you do and your entire adsense network will get the dreaded Value Price, thus reducing your entire adsense income to 1/10 of what it was. Don't get "priced"!

And those MFA sites will eventually get you banned.
