High Speed is not available in my area, another alternative?

    Hi guys!

Im soooo fed up with my SLOW SLOW SLOW Dial Up connection with AOL.. My huge problem is that I live in sort of a remote residential area that doesnt service High Speed anywhere. I know that I have an alternative to use Satellite High Speed, but god is it expensive, and is it even really that fast??

I would die for some DSL or Broadband even, but alas they dont service this area. Anyone heard of any alternatives??

    :)

I am in the same boat but stay away from companies like Hughes Net and other Satilite Companies because I ahve heard nothing but regret stories. The best dial-up I found was Net Zero High Speed, it does not use a lot of extra software like AOL. AOL's software always slowed my Internet down, it was quite a bit faster with Net Zero but still not great like real high speed. If decide to switch please let me know and I will email you a referral link from my account.

The sad thing for me is cable and DSL both come with in three miles in either directions but they make that last little bit to my house.

Does a wireless broadband ISP service your area?

Look for a Wi-Max provider in your area.

Wow ... I remember back in 1996 I had a friend - IT Manager in one big hotel network and at his house he wasn't able to get broadband and only Dial-Up was available. So this guy made the funniest thing I've ever seen -- he bought router with 4 external networks (WAN's) with built in load balancing and he hooked up 4 dial-ups !!!

Ha ha ha ... he was so happy one year later when he hooked up the Time-Warner Broadband :) ha ha ha ... but this 4 dial-ups saved his ass for that time .. and he loved it .. that was the geekiest thing I've ever seen.

    Cheers,

    Venetsian.

P.S. If you're willing to experiment try to make something like that ...

Can you access internet by connecting thru your mobile? Most mobile companies provide broadband access and if you have a mobile with gprs, you will be able to use it. Bluetooth is a plus...

Thanks everyone for your advice!! Appreciate it. Im gonna look into some things and I'll let you all know if I find anything.. What sucks the most is trying to upload a 6mg script to my website and it takes about 3 hours with intermittent connectivity... Im gonna pull my hair out literally.

There is some software in the UK that compresses the data your dial-up sends and (presumably receives) so that the connection appears to be faster.

Maybe try Google something like 'compress data speed up dial up connection'

In the UK the company that does it ofers it on a subscription basis (I remember reading the ad for it before I got broadband some years ago now!)

I know what you mean it's bloody frustrating. Even if you do find a wireless provider in your area, research them thoroughly as the connection can be pretty chat with dropouts, even though it maybe broadband.

Try anything BUT AOL, I think its slow because of all of the useless things they load (their programs) while you surf! I noticed a difference in speed when I switched from AOL to a different dial up provider.

Wireless would be out of the question eh?

If you have cable, you almost certainly have cable modem access. That's your best bet. However, if they don't offer it, talk to your cell phone provider. If you have cell phone access, you should be able to get unlimited high speed mobile minutes for about $70/month. A lot more expensive than dial-up/dsl/cable, but tons less than satellite. Plus, the upload speed beats the pants off of satellite (which only offers fast downloads).

Cell phone access might be good but I don't think it's a lot better than dial up. the phone N90 has this feature where you can connect to the internet. It's an expensive phone though.
