A backlink is a link on another website leading to yours. If the link in your signature is one of your websites then you already achieved 1 backlink from this thread.

A high quality backlink would be a backlink on a high PR website.

Some ways to get backlinks... forum sig, commenting on blogs, and adding to web directories.

A higher quality link would actually be a lower PR website (relatively) but from a site within your niche / area.

The highest quality link (I use that term loosely) would be a high PR website, with a low OBL count in your niche.

Don't forget that your links must be crawlable and direct (not redirected through any other pages).

You can get high quality links by establishing relationships with high quality sites or by producing great content and letting them know about it.

Alternatively, you could try guest blogging if you can find some good quality sites which accept guest posts. Usually this will result in a good link back to your site.

Relationships like that would take months and maybe not even then. And they still always want me to link back too. That's why I got 50 of those links on my site at the bottom...

I would start if I knew where to start at. I'm sitting here with a blank slate in my mind.

I'm envious of your site's visitors. I would be so happy with a third of your current people being online.

The most my roleplaying site has had on is 62 at one time.

    We've been online since 2004.

Lairston, you also have an RP forum? They're rare on this site! Nice to meet you :) Hey maybe we can help each other out!

...See, tha's what everyone says when they seem my site. But they're seeing it after it's already declined. If I had just arrived at that number after it went up from a lower number, I wouldn't be on here pleading and desperate. It's declined by about a third in the past month which is real scary.

The easiest way to gain backlinks is to creative content which users want to share and link to.

To be less broad, you should consider networking with other websites/blogs/internet users to help build relationships which eventually lead to backlinks and many other great opportunities.

They never want to link to my site without wanting something in return. That's assuming they want to at all. How do I reach out? I don't get where to start. I already know a lot of people in the roleplaying world. I put up links to my best articles, on twitter, and tweet them...

    Nobody links.

I think this is the burning question of every link builder... the issue of quality.

What about the nofollow tag on practically all forums and blogs now? Does it matter if you leave links on these sites that has nofollow on links?

it is the thing that will kill me if i do not solve it. my site is more than a site to me, it is my community and my life's work. as it dies and nothing i try works, i begin to give up on everything in general.

You need to surf in Google websites that are relevant to your nature of business. Just approach them and get them convinced to add your link to your website.

In my own experiences, high quality backlinks would mean links for niche relative, higher PR, dofollow sources. I think the free service from backlinkwatch.com would be helpful for this purpose.

    Have a nice day,

There are differing views on this issue. While some feel that a link back to your site, in your own niche, weighs more heavily, there are others who subscribe to the view that a link is a link, let it be from any site.
This approach does have its merits. For example, www.google.com is a PR10 ranking where it has only a very small links back from its own niche, a search engine. The maximum no. of links back to Google are from unrelated sites. There so many such cases like msn.com, cnn.com, bbc etc that it is hard to ignore this view.

And yes the primary attribute does affect the backlink. Dofollow links do help.

A quality link is a link on a site related to your niche... - simple as that.

A "high" quality link is a link on a site related to your niche with a high PR... simple as that.

I think you need to concentrate on just building backlinks. High Quality and Low Quality backlinks will just come by nature. Once you have mastered backlink building, then you can target "High"Quality Backlinks.

Search for as many forums as possible - then sign up to post your backlink as signatures.
