Just been doing a Google search on PR6 directories. There are a few coming up that have gone down to PR2 or less. What the hell happened there?

    Thanks

ongoing penalisations or downgrading of pr due to other sites they linked to also losing pr
its to stop directory owners selling submissions for pr

pagerank is not stable, it changes frequently depending on your efforts to maintain it :)

Sites losing or gaining in page rank is not confined only to directories - it happens across the spectrum. Focus on the broad range of criteria that determines quality not only page rank.

Yea, PR is all fun and games and should not be completely relied on...

My main directory went straight to PR3 on the first update, stayed PR3 on the second and then dropped to PR2 on this last one... The site has got more links (quality ones especially, absolutely none paid for) over time and it dropped, why? well, who knows? :) These things happen, it's bound to rise again over time, so heck just let it be and live your life! :p ;)

    It happens...

We have had a few directories loss PR then a few updates later they gained PR2-3
with absolutely no backlink building to them since they lost PR and yet the rebounded
which tells me that its basically pot luck and nothing more.

My home page's PR dropped from 5 to 4 during the Google devaluation of some directories' PR, because that sent a downside "ripple effect" out to those of us who had links from those devalued directories. Their dropping PR affected ours, too. It has caused me personally to focus on securing additional, good-quality links from sources other than directories, although I still do submit to directories as well.

I don't think directories can compete in ANY way with google, problem is that google needs directories, why not, directories are also crawled by google, directory entries also indexed by google, directories help google when it returns valuable and relevant websites in searching results. They may seem like link farms but in fact some of them are really really helpful for SR.

There may also be some other web directory websites which gained pr during the same timespan which was not apparent in the search you did. They may just not have advertised it as such.

I haven't noticed any changes in PR recently. The late update was at the end of July and here are the directory PageRank stats compared to previous updates.

A bit strange, I noticed even after this update that my latest three sites (one was a directory) they still did not obtain a PR even though when I had previously created a new site they got a PR straight up...

It wasn't much of a PR update from what I can tell.
