Does a backlink from a comment on a blog page with say PR5 worth more than say PR1?... even though its just a comment on a blog?
Assuming both PR5 and PR1 sites are related to yours, PR5 will be more effective. Else, the related one will be more effective no matter what's the PR. - Just My Opinion -
if it doesn't have the rel=nofollow atributte, the link in the comment is considered as a normal link.
You guys are forgetting a few things here. Is the page related to yours? (mixke touched upon it, but I'm going to expand on it) The reason why I ask is because pages that are related to the ones they're linking to will have a profound benefit on the weight of the link they're giving out. Note I said PAGES, not sites here. Search engines rank pages instead of sites, so it really won't matter whether the page is on the same site or another one (though external incoming links are generally preferred since they can drive targeted traffic to your site). Is the search engine spider able to follow the link? (siflur touched upon it, I'm going into somewhat more detail here) (Not just rel="nofollow" but other means, such as the nofollow META directive). If it's not, forget about it. How many links are on the page linking back to yours? The fewer the better, since the more links that are on a specific page, the more PageRank will be divided up among those pages (for example, if you have a PR1 page with 100 links, each link will get 1/100th of that PR1). What is the PageRank of the PAGE you're being linked from? Not the home page of the site, but the page your incoming link appears on. Where is that page ranking in the search engines for the keywords you want to target? If it's not showing up in Google, then it won't be nearly as good (a good rule of thumb, and this ties into the previous point rather nicely, is to target pages that have a PR 4 and that are in the top 1,000 results in Google for the keywords you're targeting). Answer those questions, then decide for yourself.
Yes. The fact that it is a blog comment doesn't matter at all - a link is a link. This is a common newbie webmaster misconception.
But, the low PR page may eventually become a higher PR page. Instead of debating between the 2.... why not just post a comment on both? In the time it took you to debate between the 2, login to DigitalPoint, and then post the thread, sit around and wait for a response, then read all of the responses, you could have easily posted a great useful comment on both the pr 5 and the PR 1, plus found probably 10+ more pages and site to comment on to receive more backlinks. Im actually nervous to make a signature link..... I know it might sound funny.... but what if Google's algorithm picks up that signature links w/ anchor text = SEOers ..... this might cause an uproar --- but what do you guys think????
Then it takes about 3 seconds to delete them and move on... It shouldnt be your sole method of link building, but it's great for traffic, and does help, if even a tiny bit, for seo.
For the blog commenting, it is more imprtant to concern on the niche the PR. Of course, it is better to get a high PR then low PR is both of them are do have same niche as your site
