High Post Count = Slow Site

I've been noticing my forums getting slower and slower to load, and I can onlyu imagine that it's becasue the post count is getting high.

    Threads: 8,586, Posts: 70,322, Members: 1,831

Is there a way to prune threads, but leave people individual post count intact? I don't think so but any idea what I can do?

    The forum is at www,therumormill.info

I don't think it's a good idea to prune posts (unless your forum is unimportant). I have a forum with almost 250K posts but there are no load problems at all unless the traffic or concurrent users go beyond the number that my VPS can handle. I'd suggest that you upgrade your machine if you're having load problems.

Additionally vbulletin has some settings that can cut down on resources. Try disabling the Currently Active Users in forumdisplay & showthread, change the WOL settings to show members randomly (it's alphabetic at the moment) on forumhome, activate template caching e.t.c.

Check vbulletin.com for server optimization tips & tricks.

I'm not sure about the server, but it seems no matter how many visitors I have on, each page is slow to load. I have slow loading times even when there are few visitors on, which makes me believe the database is too large. On another note, my database is on a separate, shared server so maybe that is the problem?

Probably, I'd suggest that you check vbulletin's forums since they offer advice for server optimization. BTW It loaded up just fine here.

Its slow because of the size of the sql database. If you are goin to use vbulletin software you should buy more ram for mysql (I was using 8gb rams for a forum which had 2m posts )

Of course you can move to punBB,it will be a lot faster (%3000 :D )

That's not a large enough forum to have any load problems with any software, it's obviously a host problem.

70,000 posts is a piece of cake for vBulletin. The shared hosting is more likely to be the root cause of your problems.

Looks like there's more problems there as I get this message when I try and connect to your forum. Since they specifically state they have an issue with a router that leads to your server, there's a distinct possibility the router itself has been flaky causing your slowdowns. See if it gets better when they're done fixing it.

Don't prune the posts, I'd suggest getting better hosting.

    First, optimize your database frequently.

If you have a dedicated server first monitor it closely to find out what is the botleneck, most likely it's ram. Optimize your mysql server, with optimized server you can save a lot as you don't need so much resources...and finally when the system is optimized monitor it and upgrade if nessesary.

With the forum back up now, I tried clicking around a bit in your open forum. Response was not instant, but it wasn't bad.
