    Hello friends!
I am very new to SEO and Internet marketing. In month or two I am going to launch a new website which is about personalized gifts (Picture mug, personalized tshirt, wedding albums, puzzles and bags etc.) also there will be option to modify own pictures and then order printouts.
There are some very old and very well established websites on the internet offering same services. I have checked and found out that almost all of the main keywords have very high competition and the keywords that are left have very less search volume.
I am not getting how I would be able to get a good position in google SERP for main key words? google instant is adding more to my worries.
I need some expert suggestions on how I should promote my products online.
    Thanks!

You need to have an SEO perform extensive in-depth keyword research to find the longtail phrases. Begin by targeting those and gradually work your way up to the broader phrases. In a niche such as this there will be plenty of longtails and very very good opportunities to convert those to customers.

Check the keyphrase report in my signature for an example.

PM me if you need any more help.

Ok I got your point :) what you mean to say is that I should work on long tail keywords first and also work on main keywords side by side. Which method would you vote for: Blogging on different websites or Link building with relevant websites? And thank you very much for this report it cleared so many things to me. :)

since your website is more of a sales type of website. You can go ahead with few blogposts on your own website and concentrate more on linkbuilding. Especially sitewide links with catchy titles.

I guess you need a tool which will help you with keywords - semrush for example.

    Hey there.

Nothing to worry about with Google instant, with your niche- you likely won't be suffering. PPC maybe, but not organically. If you want to ease your mind on the Google Instant issue: http://www.conversationmarketing.com/2010/09/google-instant-end-universe.htm

By the sounds of it, though, you may have bigger issues at hand. Re: Which method would you vote for: Blogging on different websites or Link building with relevant websites? I would vote for both, heavily. For both strategies I would recommend building consistently, volume matters - but a massive surge in inbound links is always fishy. I would also ensure that you're using targeted anchor text that reflects your keyword research.

Wish you the very best of luck.

    Regards,
    -e

Thanks for this article I had never noticed that Google Instant only shows if you're signed in :) and yes I am planing for a slow but steady link building with keywords in anchor text with lots of variation.

May be i am wrong but if these (Picture mug, personalized tshirt, wedding albums, puzzles and bags etc.)are your desire keywords then work on them, only one keyword with good competition. Don't waste important links for less competitive and less traffic keywords

Just target those highly competitive keywords ans start doing good SEO for your website. Just keep doing good efforts and wait for some time. no one is permanent in Google's ranking, believe in yourself that you can beat them.
    All the Best.
