I see my competitors get away with it all the time, but I don't do it myself as if Google "caught" me I suspect my site(s) would get penalised.

If it is a black hat, throw-away website, then maybe go for it, but if it is a site which you intend on keeping for many years, it probably isn't worth the risk.

I see people hiding content, links, all sorts of shady stuff with CSS... In the day people used to hide text on the same color background, this is no different. It may work "today" but "tomorrow" you will get caught.

Google may not catch you right away, but in time they will.

I mean they read forums all the time lol.

It's not worth the risk. The trade off is poor, you don't get a whole lot from hiding text. I sometimes have clients who do this and I always suggest that they remove any hidden text (behind css or otherwise), it doesn't help the site or ranking well enough to risk being penalized or banned.

Really? Google pays their staff to surf the forums & read posts to find out who's hiding text in css files?
