I heard of hidemyass.com about two years ago, and have used it since. I also like it because it is very fast.

And don't forget about SEO. They invested a lot into site, buying high-quality links from an assortment of websites.
Hi, I own the site so let me explain: The name probably plays the most important role in catching peoples attention. Without the name I could easily tell you I wouldn't be where I was now. Reliability over the years has enabled me to have a high visitor return rate. Fast servers and easy access is why. When the site opened it got featured by Digg, as many of you know getting on Digg is better than any $xxxx marketing campaign, and best of all it is free. At the time though the site had no ads. I'm also starting more and more marketing campaigns on community based websites, not really to get a lot of clicks, but more so awareness and viral marketing.
The owner of it also owns zymic.com, which is extremely popular amongst technical minded school-kids. That must have given it a big traffic source almost straight away. He also rapidly expanded it to just more than a proxy, offering proxy lists etc. Not to mention the catchy name and early entry in to the market.
Also, at the time proxies were in VERY high demand. I remember making a proxy for school about a year ago, and then getting a spike 24/7 of 300,000 hits a day. Proxy.org (don't use it at all anymore! not good for adsense) at the time had 1,000 proxies on it tops.
Yeah, but now proxies are 2-a-penny, so it's a lot harder to get a very successful one, as schools quickly detect and block them. I've noticed that my 1 week old proxy is doing better than my 2 month old proxy, even though its advertised far less. I guess it's because it hasn't been blocked yet.
