Hide text from Google

    Is there any way that I can hide some of the text on my website from Google? I have a site where I have 1 column with links, 1 column with news and 1 column with content on every page. I am afraid that Google’s duplicate filter will stop some of the pages on my site since the news column contains quite a lot of text.

    Is there any way to hide the news part on my pages from Google without breaking Google’s guidelines?

    Use google sitemap to point links to those pages, this way those pages can still get index and cached by google and you have nothing to worry about. Although you will not get pr benifit unless you link to your xml site.

    Sorry shutzu, that is not very smart to do, although I do not think it will get you banned, I do not recommend it, placing a bunch of links in an alt tag or image looks very tacky and may be counted as spam by some search engines. As for flash I think you know that google does not read these kind of links unless you optimize the flash file correctly, even then it would look very tacky and not good for users.

    well.. he just want to hide the text for google and make it visible for visitors, for which the best way is to create a flash with the text, or an image (jpg) and google will surelly not see the text

    Point taken, however google will see the text if they cache the page. They have both a cache with images as well as cache without images. If there is any text hidden in the images google will see it. Example below:

    Cached Page with images

    Cached page without images

    As you can see the link that is placed inside the logo is fully known to goolge, thus making hiding links inside of images not the best idea unless it is a reasonable link.

    If the SE's can't 'see' the image then how exactly would they even know there was links in the image?

    OH, one other point. I you really want to hide the text from google then just put the information in a comment tag somewhere in your souce code and that should be fine.

    I think that some of you might have misunderstood me a little. I have 1 column with news that is the same on every page in my site, and that news column contains more text then then I got content on some pages. So I wanted Google to index the content, not the news on each page.

    I guess that I could do it with pictures or flash, but it is too much work. I could keep the news in an iFrame but I don’t want that either. I will probably just try to reduce the news text.

    Tanks for the answers everybody

    I think something like:
    <script>
    document.write('text1'+'text2'+etc.);
    </script>

    Why are you putting duplicate content on all of your pages? It won't benefit your readers. It's a waste of time for SEO purposes too. Sorry, I might have misinterpreted your post ... but I don't see the point of putting the same content on many pages.
