Hidden Text, what to search my source code for?

What are some keywords, phrases, or tags that I can search my source code to find hidden text or other nasty shit that shouldn't be there?

    Thanks

    Hello,

For starters open up your page in a browser and hit CTRL+A. If you see something selected that you can't see on the page otherwise, that's hidden text.

Next open up your source code and search for "visibility: hidden". That's usually something hidden, but not necessarily hidden text. (i.e. it might be a part of menu that drops down when you mouse over)

Also you could search for "display: none". Same as above.

Now search for <img tags and look at the alt= or title= values. If you see any hidden text there that's not supposed to be there, you can simply delete it.

It might be other methods to hide text, but this is a start. Hope it helps you clean your page.

Thanks, I repped you. But I didn't find anything. I'm just trying to figure out why I've been dropped for every search term. The site is an old established PR6 with lots of authority. I can't imagine what the problem is.

You can check webmaster tools maybe there were some 404 pages when google crawled your website or something, although I really doubt this would affect your loss in rankings.

Is this drop in rankings a new thing or has it been in effect for a while? did anything happen to your website to correlate with this? like a downtime or some thing...

I checked webmaster tools. Thing is the site is totally an authority site, SEO isn't even needed. It's ranked in the top20 on technorati, its been on NBC, etc etc etc

All the sudden, like 3 days ago, EVERYTHING dropped. If I search google for site.com it still shows up, but that's the only way to see it.

I unpublished all my posts for the past week, I deleted some posts by guest bloggers, and I checked all the sites on the blogroll to make sure I wasn't linking to a banned site. I checked source code for hidden text. I am really at a loss. I could file a re-inclusion request with Google but technically I'm not banned and that would take forever anyway.

Have you considered that the actual Google update isn't finished yet and your site may be back soon?

Unfortunately hidden text still work well in ranking .
I have reviewed a site ranking No 1 and get high PR with competitive keywords like hardwares related keywords .
Google is not as smart as we think .

Porn, viagra, and casino are the top three words to check. Here's what I do when I'm doing a site review for a client and looking for this type of stuff. Google has what's called "site search." It looks like this:

    site:domain.com

Obviously replace "domain.com" with whatever your domain is. You can dig even deeper by placing a keyword after the site search syntax, and for the purposes of checking PPC (porn, pills, and casinos), I do this:

    site:domain.com porn
    site:domain.com viagra
    site:domain.com casino

Google will check the pages of that site that it has indexed for any references to those keywords and then display them to you. That's the easiest way to catch that stuff. Not that it's very common or anything, and really, you don't need to go any further than that unless you actually suspect a problem. In that case, it's just a matter of reading through your source code.

Exactly as javaidanwar said, also you can string keywords together:

    See here

What "everyone" should do is setup a Google Alert for a string like that, you can put any amount of bad words in it. When one pops up on your site, you get notified by email and you can fix your site before it gets nailed.

In FireFox, I have a Web Developer toolbar (highly recommended for webmasters). Among other useful options, there is a "Show Hidden Elements" command in the "Miscellaneous" menu.

I also have an online tool called Unmask Parasites that scans web pages for illicit hidden content such as invisible spam links, iframes, malicious scripts and redirects. You can use this tool to check web pages that you don't think it's safe to open in your own web browser.

It came back. I don't know why it dropped and I don't know why it came back. I hate it when Google turns my world upside down :(
