Hey i searched and found that lot of blogs use a hidden <h1> in their main page isn't that against google rules?

Blogs that have a hidden <h1> in the main page:
    http://coedmagazine.com/
    http://tvwatch.people.com/
    http://bestblog.wordpress.com/

Other thing is how important is <h1> in the main page? if i don't have a <h1> in my main page will that hurt my SEO much?

the <h1> tag is a great way of using on page SEO to your advantage. I would highly suggest using it on your page, but only use it once on your most important keyword. :D

h1 tag is the heading of this paragraph. It is used to define the content of the page, and for proper document layout. The H1 tag is designed to tell the page topic.By using H1 tag we can get higher ranking web page

There's a whole slew of discussion on this subject over at V7N and a great thread that answers and debates this very same topic.

I'm sure its been beat like a dead horse here a time or two as well. Do yourself a favor and use the search function. There's tons of talk on the subject which should more than answer your questions. ;)

You can think of the H1 tag as being similar to the chapter title in a book. It accurately describes the content to follow and has great importance to the reader. Similarly, the H1 tag accurately describes the content to follow and has huge importance to Google.

This is good advice. I looked at those sites and found many h1 tags in the source. Not sure what hidden means.
