HIDDEN Google link popularity secret that we all forget

I know i'm a newbie here... i took on a long term consulting gig so that's why i've just now joined DP.

So here's my chip in to the community:

    Google ranks based on

    a) Relevance. THIS is based more on User COMMENTS than your own title or meta tags for obvious reasons.

    B) Google ranks based on link popularity IN EMAIL. I always forget that google spiders email to see if there is a strong blend of inbound WEB LINKS and EMAIL links.

IF you have lots of weblinks but no email links... likelihood is that you'll fall into the spammer category.

Google owns gmail so it can keep tabs on the webosphere.

May I have some of what you're smoking? :)

I think that your email comment is out to lunch, and your understanding of how any search engine ranks may be a bit flawed. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I am still trying to figure out what you are referring to by your "user comment" portion as well.

You've hit the nail on the head when you say that the big "G" does rank based on relevance - relevant inbound links, from TRUSTED sites with relevant content. Email (I don't think), has anything to do with this equation.

Other factors that are considered will be the age of the site, quality of the content, keywords selected, keyword density, keyword proximity, etc.

There's so many other factors that are "unknown", many will speculate what works and what doesn't.

For example, explain how one of the sites that I run is now ranking in the top 10 for the keywords I've selected, when I've done zero link building, zero writing, and zero promotion of the site in the last year? I've noticed my revenue stream on this site increase by about 50% without explanation - and now, it was not in the Google Sandbox, the site is about 5 years old.

By 'comments' I think he means anchor text -in which case he's reinventing the wheel because it's the cornerstone of link-building.
The other point is bollox. Most email isn't gmail or googlemail and google has no way of accessing it.

Cbrooker, YOU personally don't have to do any email link building. Infact... it's better that you don't. It looks like spam if done incorrectly. It's up the the PUBLIC to send a friend an email that says.

Google owns youtube. Google includes youtube data in it's algorithm? Google owns grandcentral. They include grandcentral regional data in its algorithm. These are all mutually inter supportive data mines.

    Magda,

Oh...sorry... yeah... by comments... i dont mean html hidden comments... i was thinking of BLOG COMMENTS and YOUTUBE COMMENTS.

You'll notice that all youtube videos that come up on page one of high traffic terms have user comments that match your search query

Wouldn't it be the other way around. Spamming Emails would be easier then getting quality web links. I want more information!

    JB,

    NO NO NO!!!

Google has a algorithm that calculates the RATIO of web links vs email links. OBVIOUSLY it can only read email links in GMAIL. UNLESS it owns other small webmail services that we don't know about.

So if you get a million email links but NO high PR web inbounds... well.. you trip the spam alarm

Yes, but no sure about the "comments thing" as i think its due to video
content and proper SEO has been done ,H1 , titled pages , and even the videos descriptions (authors descrip).

We have a video site and have noticed many of our vids are in top spots with certain "titles"
being used for that sites niche with 1-5 million results and we dont have many comments as the site is new...

but will be checking this theory to see if its accurate :)

    thx

Hi Malcom, Yeah.. i actually know a couple of the algorithm designers at google ... they think very logically. They rate user comments with nested keywords far more RELEVANT than your own titling and descriptions.

If the other videos that compete with you also have little to no comments, then its like the whole you and buddy being chased in the forest by a bear thing.

You dont have to run faster than the bear. Just faster than you buddy!

To figure in more "relevant content" on the given page would help the algo and then if you
check the frequency between posts you could also get a variance for how truly popular the video really is ;)

Will wait a few months and see if you where right on this ;)

Never need to run from any "bear" providing you carry a big Gun :D

the way to test if google does indeed spider gmail is to simply offer your news letter subscribers a free downloadable doc or mp3 etc... BY EMAIL. including the keywords right next to the your link url that shows up for that google search.

    THEN,

One the linked page... have a REFERRED BY formmail telling all your subscribers that IF they refer this free deal to a friend... they get an EXTRA SPECIAL SECRET LINK not published online that's worth twice as much.

So everyone will be more likely to forward the link. THEN check your google rank in 8-72 hours.

i am sure they do think logically, but also logically they know that gmail is a VERY small % mainly used by geeks.

If you drop some of your clothing the bear will often stop to smell it so i am told ;)

A word to the wise, as i am sure you ARE wise.
It is good that you respond to comments people make.... shows you are interested in the thread in the forums.

Not so good is to say...

That could mean consulting gig in how many onion bits to put on a big mac for all we know ;)

Lol, if that was true all email spammers would have the highest rankings.

And if you wonder why commented videos rank higher, well it's about the keyword density as usualy there's not much text on a video page other than the comments.

Google doesn't care, nor can detect, if it's a comment by a user or just regular text. It's just text, plain and simple.

And there's no secret or hidden thing about SEO. Everything is open and in front of you.

    max,

because google owns youtube, it does infact differentiate the value of text entered from the video producer vs a comment from a different user.

Google spiders everything. It tries to collect personal data about you in order to serve more targeted Adsense ads.

But this is not remotely related to the rankings of websites or SEO.

So I'm not sure how it is important to me as an SEO? Or this forum?

I'm not sure where you are going with this?
