    yes and yes

you can place links with the same text color as your background, but when google finds out, you will be punished

    I would advice against it.

I will also not advice you to place the hidden links as this technique is considered as spamming & Google or other SE's can penalize your site. So don't use it.

Why would you do something like this in the first place.
It will only get your site banned.
Best advice is to play by the rules, it might take longer to climb the serps, but when you finally get there you are there for the long run.

Hey avoid doing all these black hats because once google recognised then you would be surely punished of which you could even loose the serps..

What if I place the backlink like this :
    <a href="http://www.example.com" rel="dofollow"> </a>
    Code (markup):

Whatever you are thinking of doing, it's a black-hat SEO technique. Unless you don't mind getting yourself banned, then I would suggest you forget about it.
It may not be visible to visitors' view, but a simple scan through the page source will reveal of a lot of things.

    How about this Scenario.

My background color is white. My menu has a background-Image which is Black/white gradient, hence my Font-Color is white again.

How does Google make a decision now? If google can't analyse the Image... then it implies, I have white background and white font color in menu too.

Hmm...have no idea, but just some answers:

you do not need to add the rel="dofollow", if a hyper link does not have rel="nofollow" it is automatically a dofollow link. And about google web guidelines, trust me, if you do get penalized your traffic will drop like anything. So be careful :)

It's best to simply hide the link in plain sight, make it look like part of the content of the page. You may want to use a different style from your regular links so that it's not immediately obvious. For example, making it look like ordinary text until the user hovers over it.

Ignore all those other replies from jealous competitors. I think you should make ALL your links hidden.

And yes, it will affect your rankings. :)

Off topic: Is anyone in India capable of posting in actual English, as opposed to that godawful textspeak?
