My website hosting service provider has given me hosting saying my website will have unlimited webspace and bandwidth. Does that mean I can upload any number of videos to my website??? I am planning to upload more than 500 GB of videos with to my website. Is it possible to do that??? What does it mean if it says 100 gb of bandwidth but webspace unlimited.Kindly help.
Normally when you visit any web hosting website providing the unlimited webspace and bandwidth service. you need to understand one thing no one gives you unlimited storage for your website. They must be a limitation after certain upload. In policy or guideline page you can read the information about the unlimited bandwidth. You will notice they have cleared about the limitation after certain storage period. About bandwidth the same process they follows. If you are looking to purchase the web hosting. i will recommend you to go with the vps hosting or reseller hosting.
Thanks for the reply.I have already purchased hosting service. But when I talked to one of their customer executives she said I can upload any number of videos I want. But she was technically stupid when I asked few more things in detail and then she said I have to raise ticket to clarify technical queries. Also, can you please tell me where I can look up this thing which you have mentioned.( In my main control panel ???? where ???)
think about it terms of pizza and beer. Your friends invite you over for "unlimited" pizza and "unlimited" beer, you go there you have just a beer or two or a slice or two and its ok. Go there and use up "too many resources" and you might be kicked out, additionally the more resources one person has, the less the others have access to. This is what unlimited HDD and unlimited bandwidth is like. Its only really suitable for low resource usage sites, and often the TOS will place restrictions on everything. Your site itself will only really have access to the "leftovers" that others havent consumed. (The fact that your allowed to upload movies as much as you like is a concern, and for me i would run like hell.) Some hosts are more controlling then others, and when you have unlimited you might not even get a real slice, with some hosts putting secret limits at 1gb bandwidth even though its "unlimited". Back to the pizza analogy, imagine if you walked in to pizza hut, and they told you its unlimited pizza for $2 or guaranteed 3 slices of quality pizza for $5, likewise sometimes it is better to choose a host that gives you a limited amount of space, but guarantees that those resources that you need (and paid for) are there for you whenever you need them. In your specific case, if you genuinely need to host 500gb of videos, you will need to consider a dedicated server, if you stay on an unlimited host, dont be upset or give them negative reviews or complain if they kick you off for hosting and streaming 500gb of videos.
There is no such thing as unlimited. It is just a marketing strategy of many web hosts. If you are with a shared web hosting provider and you pay $5-$10 per month, for 500 GB of videos you will need a VPS or a dedicated server.
Its just a marketing strategy. Read through their tos and you will be able to see that there are some conditions for this. Usually it says you can use average of what all others use in their hosting.
There is no UNLIMITED ... My webhost also provides unlimited space and bandwidth. Well that does not mean I can just upload hundreds of GBs there. Their policy says that you can upload a lot of data but they will only backup 20GB on their weekly backup. As for the Bandwidth, when it says unlimited I think it is, not sure though.
If you have unlimited space and bandwidth you should upload 500 TB of data.... You won't be able to though...but you will learn a few things: 1) How big the drive is that you are hosted on. 2) How slow their network actually is and 3) How fast you are booted off the host...
Thanks all for your reply. Now, I am in better position in understanding terms like bandwidth and disk space. Now, I have another query.I found my diskspace to be 5 GB.So, does that mean I cant upload more than 5 GB during entire lifetime of my website. Or their is a time period after which I can again upload 5 GB for examble after an year. Secondly, if I register 2nd domain with same hosting service provider where my account is already present , so when I start uploading stuff into my website, does 5 GB diskspace limit pertains to separate domains or to my one account only?
ok i have to stop you right there. i would like to stress the importance of buying your domain from a domain registrar. i would like to stress the importance of buying your domain from a domain registrar. i would like to stress the importance of buying your domain from a domain registrar. i would like to stress the importance of buying your domain from a domain registrar. i would like to stress the importance of buying your domain from a domain registrar. I buy my domains from namecheap.com (and i too made the mistakes of buying my domains from a hosting provider so i now what im talking about) Now lets say i do join unlimited hosting and have a dispute or get kicked off for uploading too many movies or other (this happens all the time) but because i have the domains and hosting separate if there is any issue i just move to a new host. If you get the domain from the same hosting provider and you have disputes or issues or want to change hosting providers it is often difficult and expensive to do so. -> people have lost domains from these sorts of disputes, in fact there are alot of horror stories out there. Regarding your webspace as being 5gb, let me explain the way the names and hosting works. For all intents and purposes, a webspace, or 5gb HDD is like a bookshelf. A domain name is essientially a sign to allow people to find that specific bookshelf -> the name itself has no space or HDD itself its just a big yellow sign to tell browsers where to find what they are looking for. Lets say that you have purchased a bookshelf, holds 5gb of books -> thats your HDD. Now lets say that you have purchased 2 domain names, these would be "signs" pointing to wherever you want. If you point them both to your 5gb bookshelf, then they both share the same space. If you changed one of the signs(domains) you can point it to a different "bookshelf". As long as your hosting provider allows for multiple addon domains then you could have 100 domain names all point to your specific hdd (or bookshelf) -> and just like in a library, pointing more signs to the same bookshelf doesnt make it any larger, the only way to make it larger and get more space would be to buy a bigger space.
Many thanks to the way you explained my query and thanks to everyone whoever replied to this thread...I have new queries now. 1. My account subscription got deactivated today because they say it has expired despite it being vaild till 1st June 2012.Actually while opening account they told me it is valid for next 3 years and I dont have to pay any recurring fee.Only I have to pay for domain renew fee.Now they are saying I have to pay recurring fee as well. What can I do now?? 2. Since they have deactivated my subscription, I cant access my web files. What should I do???I want to copy those files so that I can switch over to new hosting service but now I cant do that as well. 3. Please suggest me how to tackle this issue...These people are really cheap and can take any tactics just for few bucks. They have bothered me a lot with their very bad customer service entire year.Even if I get nothing from them, I want my web files back and also my domain name. Its almost an years effort which took my website into under 1,00,000 ranking.
you really need to chat with them and thats all you can really do, you are really at their mercy. Alot of hosting companies have representatives at webhostingtalk.com you can chat there and perhaps their sales reps or other people can give you better advice. IMO if you didnt have 2 backups of the data, then it wasnt important to you. What most people dont realise is there are thousands of hosting companies which are 'useless', and its not a matter of if they will fail, but rather when. Every day i can find new hosting companies either closing or being sold, and often they are sold to people with no IT skills as a "turnkey automated company". With reseller accounts going for next to nothing, and with free master reseller accounts going around, we can all expect to see hundreds more hosting companies come and go, and these 1 man shows arent going to have the same business ethics and principles that you would expect from a hosting provider. -> im not trying to make people panic but rather highlight the importance of having your own backup at home, and having your domain name at a domain registrar and where you go for hosting is up to you.
