Hey folks, I'm a Computer Science major at Southern Oregon University. I have about 5 terms (quarters) left until I graduate. I've hit a point where I realize I'm a noob, for some reason I always assumed I was very knowledgeable when it came to web development. I'm comfortable with html and I can make minor edits to php, but I could never sit down and write a php application. For some reason css hates me, I don't know why. I know java too, but I'm not able to make anything useful with it. I used to follow hardware closely but one day I realized I didn't care which video card got an extra 3 fps in the Quake 3 demo, so I didn't renew my Maximum PC subscription. This term I'm taking: -Data Structures and Algorithms <- we're learning them in Java so that helps, it's my favorite class. -Calculus -Security 1 -Chemistry 100 <- Yeah, I've still got some gen ed stuff to finish up
Hey captain, I'm from salem myself. I know the feeling about losing interest in high speed computers, I tend to like going out with my friends or working on a new project more then playing top end computer games now-a-days. Your on the right path by joining DP and you'll learn a lot here. You might want to start a project or two in PHP and just use the various sites out there to teach yourself. If you know other programming languages well (at least java) you should be able to properly search for functions (like php loops, or php if then) and grasp the concepts almost immediately. For my first project I created a mysql powered e-commerce website with paypal built in. Took me a couple months but it worked out. Anyhow good luck, Oregon is a great place for web developers I think.
Hey CaptainB, I know what you mean about CSS, I think it hates me too! I'm still finding that tables are the best for positioning and CSS is just used for stylising. Sure you'll do well and find what you need here on DP. Good luck.
Thanks for the welcome everybody. 18 posts later and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna stay. A lot of open-source labs are opening in Oregon, especially Portland. Which is good for web developers and IT here in general. Plus the weather keeps us inside and working. Thanks?
Hi CaptainB Welcome to the DP or Big Webmasters Database. Good luck on this site and enjoy. Regards, Mustafa
