Hey guys

I was just wondering, does anyone know if the free wordspress blogs
have the *same* control panel, features, etc as the wordpress.org downloadable zip version that
people can download and use?

yes the downloadable wordpress cms has the same control panel just like their self hosted blogs.

Both of them (wordpress.com hosted version / self-hosted version) has the same control panel. In case for self-hosted - you have more flexible in managment.

- You can install any plugins you wanted.

- You can place adsense, while wordpress.com hosted version wouldn't allow it.

- You can modify template, coding and such as much as you wanted.

 

They are both the same, but hosting your own is best because more ways to customize and clean up the site.

 

I prefer self hosted, there's lots of thing could be modified.
and good thing about wordpress, you could install any plugin you want to get better and quality site.
