I think the video does a good job of explaining how Google views directories. On the other hand, I am not sure if it answers the $300 per year question.

If you've got the money then Yahoo is worth it. But if you only have $300 to market your site, you might be better served by looking for quality directories in your niche or general directories that are ranked in the search engines but cost less.

if you have time you can find out that there is a lot of listing is dead.
how Google to judge whether the directory is human edited?

Sorry, still not buying it. I can understand $300 for a listing review process but not $300 a year. It's not like they review their listings every year, now or do they?

@cm2010, how many traffic do you get monthly from yahoo!?
i am quite sure it's pretty low, it's best if you can show the proof.
and i am wondering why you are willing to spend $300 for a listing,
but it's mean to pay a few dollars someone for a logo.
    what's your business strategy?

300$ per year is too much. I *believe* I should be ok with one time fee, but not yearly.

I would not spend $300 even for onetime fee.
I have my websites listed in DMOZ and I'm not getting any traffic from there at all. They just not working!
From PR prospective in most of the cases it has no impact, because these directories have so many links on each page, that you get 0 towards your PR.
Instead, invest these $300 per year in Google AdWords and receive quality traffic.

His strategy is to pay $300 that will buy him 1 backlink, because that's all he will get.

He had 1 backlink that made his PR count from AMRAY for free and I can assure you that for
$300 he could get solid backlinks from 10 - 15 paid directories and be better of PR wise.

    :)

I'm on the opinion that Yahoo Directory is the only directory that is worth the money.

I'm not just running post count. Ok here is why I think like that:

I've heard from many people that the link from Yahoo Directory is the second in weight after DMOZ (if we talk about directories) also I've heard from people with sites in the Yahoo Directory for 50-60 unique visitors a day coming only from there. If you don't have such results don't blame the directory immediately. Nevertheless, if you ask me, I never would give $ 300 annually just for one link, no matter how strong it is.

Yahoo and especially Dmoz feel like ghost towns. It you view source you can see the tumble weed.
$300 for a deeply buried link is $300 down the drain.

Is your site such that you're unable to recoup the annual fee?

I have a couple links in the directory but I'm grandfather in so I don't have to pay per year. I'm not sure if I would pay each year if I had to though.

Who is still using yahoo! as a directory or even search engine!
So you have the answer. Why not donate the money to the charities?
