Here is what I think...

So I am always on Digg and on DP (I've turned into quite the nerd lately...). Anyways, why is it that there are always atheists making fun of Christians? I never really see Christians making fun of atheists nor atheists making fun of Muslims (that would be racists...) nor Muslims. I know Christians and Muslims are not a big part of those communities, but I have included my life experience as well into this thought. My atheist roommate always seems to offend someone when he drinks too much and talks about religion, but my religious friends are like the sweetest people you will ever meet. They could not say anything bad, ever. I know this is a small sample size, but my point is still valid.

I am just curious to know why atheists need to proclaim their atheism like they are superior to Christians? I am a Catholic and never once have made fun of anybody because of their religion, whatever it may be, or lack of religion. Why do those that do not have a religion feel so threatened by those who do?

This is a legitimate psychological question about human behavior. Please, let us be gentlemen (and ladies).

    -Christopher

Some instances I could see why, if a Christian is being judgmental and ignorant.. but often that's not even the case and the athiest just likes to be ignorant themselves.

As far as the psychology, I'd say it's science vs. belief.. and that gets ugly. Also, Christians operate on the ground of religious morals and athiests don't.

Simply put, Christians are easy targets, and the biggest reason of this is the beliefs shared by some that are contradicting (peace and love; fire and brimstone), this annoys and confuses people so they feel they have a right to attack.

both sides have points so it matters what the instance is. in your case i'd smack your roommate across the head and tell him to sit, grab a coke and a smile and stfu.

Lol, yeah I should really do that next time. And, even though I don't necessarily agree with your point about Christians operating on morals (they don't have to be religious), and atheists, not, I think it has been one of the funnier and intelligent comments I have seen on DP.

Yea like I said, then you have ignorant people. Don't mind them, they're a dime-a-dozen on this section.

Atheists seem to be their own form of religious zealot. Some of them are so fanatically faithless and they persecute and harass just as much as the fundamentalist believers.

Which means they certainly do not have the moral high ground, particularly in light of the newest atheist sect of hyper-environmentalism, which in many cases is predicated on fear, self-loathing and bad science (not unlike some religions).

It's a difference of ideas, but since many of us don't think or act rationally, we degenerate the conversation into petty name calling and personal attacks.

"if people don't want their beliefs laughed at they shouldn't have such funny beliefs" - Unknown

seriously, How are people expected to react to a story about a magic jewish zombie who can forgive you for sinning, Lives in the sky and demands you eat his flesh and drink his blood? ridicule and mockery are the ways sensible people can react to that. Who wouldn't laugh at a belief that they find preposterous?

As for atheists leaving islam alone... What planet are you on? sure, Atheists attack islam for different reasons, Where christianity is fuel for mockery and ridicule islam is fuel for highlighting the barbarism and insanity that people can justify by having a religion and believing they are doing gods work, But islam certainly isn't immune from criticism and mockery. Look on any atheist bloggers blog and you will inevitably find an "islam" tag populated by many post laughing at them and criticising them, So you aren't being singled out in that respect.

Talk about grouping all atheists into one category!!!!

I apologize if your friend is an idiot and cannot hold his tongue or liquor, but we are not all like that.

I usually find this working the other way around for me. DP is the only place I can freely talk about atheism without because constantly berated about it. I live in New Mexico where the population here is 60% Catholic (60%+ of our population is Hispanic), 30% Christian, and 10% is a mix of what's left over. Given that only 30% of our population here is Christian, this is the only group that is constantly harrassing me about atheism. I can't tell you how many times I've been told that I'm going to Hell or that people don't want to associate with me because I don't believe in a god. I even made the mistake of discussing religion with my coworkers after hours one day, and after one Christian woman heard I was atheist, she did everything in her power to try and get me fired! She complained about everything I did from sitting in my car eating lunch to how I wore my hair! I've lost friends and practically lost jobs because of what I believe. It's really sad that I live in a free country but now I've learned to NEVER voice my opinion in public because of the persecution I receive.....

The point is that there is two sides to every coin. Maybe your friend makes fun of the Christians because he's got grief from them in the past. Maybe your friend is an idiot. You can't go around assuming all atheists will be that way, just like I have to remind myself that all Christians are not mean either.

And I have to say Nate, that I am confused about your "religious morals" comment. That kinda made religious people sound MORE moral than atheists. Like we don't have morals at all. I don't know if that was your intention, but that's how I took it....Morals are morals, religious or not. Either you have them or you don't. "Religious morals" have never stopped some Christians from berating me or trying to get me fired.....

That sucks. I think the universal lesson is, fanaticism and imposing your beliefs on others is dangerous and cruel.

Exactly! I am not even going to respond to the ignorant comments made. As I made clear in the original post, I don't care if you are religious or not. Just don't try putting your beliefs onto me, no matter if you are atheist, Catholic, or the stereotypical Mormon that comes knocking on my door.

I love debating with people about all issues, but people that can't even have a rational discussion are not even worth my time. (ncz_nate, I was obviously not talking about you.)

This is so well said. I pretty much answered my question perfectly.

Firegirl sorry if I offended you. I think that woman at your work is an idiot. In my original post, I was just saying that atheists are the ones making fun of Christians, but not necessarily all of them are. I have a ton of atheist friends that never talk about religion in a way that would offend anybody. In fact, I must state that most of them are this way.

I was just trying to bring up the point that on Digg and the Politics and Religion forum here on DP, all I see are posts and stories making fun of Christian people. I mean some of the stories on Digg about religion are super funny and I will gladly digg those up, but the majority fit perfectly into the group guerilla was talking about.

An interesting point you bring up is that you do not get berated on DP. That's just because the majority here are atheists and almost goes along with what I was saying in the original post. :) Did you see some of the comments above?

So you ask why atheists laugh at christians, Then when people tell you why you have a bit of a sulk and call them ignorant? If you can't handle hearing the answer without having some kind of emotional breakdown, Don't ask the question.

My reply was perfectly rational, just because you don't like the answer doesn't make it "irrational" or "ignorant". These are just cop-out words used by people who can't formulate any kind of response.

    Nate: thank you for clarification.

Thank you for your answer. And I have read a lot of comments here on DP and in this thread that I don't agree with. If believing in someone above watching over you is what makes you a better person and gets you through the day, I'm all for that. I don't think religion in general is bad, stupid, or wrong if something positive is gained. It's just not what I choose to believe. And we both agree that no matter what the belief is, it shouldn't be forcefully be pushed on others.

And no matter what you are or believe, there will always be someone around willing to make fun.

Religion is a touchy subject for many and it can be very easy to push the wrong buttons. Everyone is probably guilty of making fun of religion, etc. at one point in time.

Reminds me of something Trey Parker (one of the creators of South Park) said once. It makes sense to me and I try and practice it. He was asked if it bothered him that a lot of people thought he was racist/discriminatory because of the things they make fun of in South Park. His reply was basically that he wasn't discriminating against anybody. EVERYONE was fair game for criticism whether they were black, white, redneck, fat, Jewish, Christian, etc. He picks on EVERYONE on purpose because if he only picked on a certain group, then he really would be discriminatory/racist.

Just because I'm an atheist doesn't mean I'm ONLY going to pick on Christians. Everyone, in my eyes, is fair game. People need to learn to lighten up, don't takes things so negatively, and learn to laugh at yourself and the silly things humans do sometimes.....

I think both of us responded at a very sufficient level. stOx, since you are ill informed of a rational response let me demonstrate.

Rational: I feel like atheists just don't understand Christians' beliefs so they cannot help but make fun of them.

Not rational: Atheisms is cool, christians suks!!!!! HAHHAAHA. LOSERS. PWND!!! God is stupid and if you believe in god you are stupid. rotfl!!!

Notice the difference? Your first response was closer to the latter and hence it was not well received. Now that you have responded diligently, I have answered to your remark in an appropriate manor.

EDIT: (We posted at the same time, Firegirl)
@Firegirl: I agree, but then you should also make fun of atheists. :) I make fun of Christians all the time. See some of my other posts on the forum. The difference is taste. You should make fun of someone or something in a way that you would not be offended if it was directed at you. Almost like a weird version of the Golden Rule.

So any answer that you don't like is irrational? The religious are too used to being treated with kid gloves and having people tread on egg shells to save them and their precious fragile feelings. well, That time has come to an end. When you ask atheists why they laugh at you expect them to reply with "it's because what you believe is funny" and then proceed to highlight exactly what aspects of your belief they find funny.

stOx, you could be smoother in your responses.

I never asked why atheists "laugh at [Christians]." My question was targeted towards human nature, as I stated. I was questioning why atheists seem to think they need to defend their belief (a belief that there is no God is still a belief) by attacking Christians.

This thread is a perfect example of what I was commenting on, ironically.
