Learn the damn difference between WHO and THAT.

    :)

Here are two fun sentences I just saw (edited a little to protect the guilty):

"The Blah Hotel is a place who gives guests a fun experience."

    and

"He's the guy that blah blah double blah on a crappy Saturday morning."

An object is "that" not "who" and a person is "who" not "that."

This is one of the things that drives me up the wall.

Since I've seen copy from writers here WHO mess this up, I thought I'd post.

I did a quick search and found this fast 10-question quiz. Try it out and see how you do. I nailed em all, which was no surprise. :D

    http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/quizzes/which_quiz.htm

    Good luck!

Thanks for this! This is also one of the things that drives me up the wall. I also dislike it when people mess up "which" with "who" and "that" with "what." Ugh.

I found this in the keyword tracker. As long as the user understands what we are talking about, sometimes we need to make compromises.

I hope the people that do SEO for long tail keywords understand ;)

    hello marketjunction,

    Thanks for that link.
In SEO it is essential to make your idea clear by using the exact term when required.

Hmm..., I came across a sentence here, "He bought all the books ________ are required for the course."

Which one is the correct answer here, that or which?

They could both be used. I would use 'that' if I was writing this sentence because it flows and reads better in my opinion.

    Thanks for the explanation, bon300187.

As I've thought as well, it's better to use 'that' instead of 'which'. I'm just need a confirmation in this case...

The correct word to use is "that."

You would use "which" if you were using a comma and setting off "are required for the course" from the rest of the sentence.

    Here are two examples:

    1. He bought all the books THAT are required for the course.

    2. He bought all the books, WHICH are required for the course, with the money his mother had given him on Tuesday.

    Hope that helps.

Now you've given all the answers away on the quiz! What fun is that?

(Scored 100% over here, but I am an English teacher who only makes the occasional grammatical mistake.)

This is going to go nicely with the tutorial I wrote not too long ago. It's nice to see some tutorials on this forum category rather than the usual threads dealing with low wages and the like ;)

I believe a sub-forum dealing with tutorials and providing grammar an style examples would contribute with both native English speakers skills-review and non-native English speakers self-improvement.

That sentence is far too cumbersome for me, I wouldn't use commas in it at all, so the question of whether to use `that' or `which' in it wouldn't arise.
For what this is worth, I tend to use `that' quite a lot because I prefer it to `which'. It's entirely a personal preference, I just like the look of `that' more than `which'.
I also tend to use `that' instead of `who', ie. I might write `He's the one that lost his dog' rather than `he's the one who lost his dog'.
Again, it's entirely a personal preference.

I've done that quiz before. Shall I send you guys the copy of my A+ report card? <grin> I don't think it's a report card that will make me rich for sure.

    This one drives me crazy.

You can get this for free!

You don't need the "for". All you have to say is:

    You can get this free!

Your and you're make me the craziest.

Your is possessive as in "your dog has ticks". You're stands for you are as in "you're kidding?". If you can't replace it with "you are" than it's your.

MJ, I think I hijacked your post. I'll climb off my soap box now.
