Right I have a little computer problem, and you guys are the smartest people I know..

I went to turn on my other PC and it will not load windows, no matter how many times I hit it and/or restart it. I just keep getting the message:

So I put the Windows XP disk in the CD-Rom drive and pressed 'R' to load it.

    Then I get the options:

    So I press R.

    But...here's where I'm stuck!!!

I get a message that says:

no options, nothing. and it will only let me type in one charachter.

I only want to repair it but it's so fecking complicated! :(

Does anyone know what I have to type in to get this mofo to repair the system?????

Could be if you were naughty and played with Win files. That's always a bad idea. If you didn't then it could be a virus, a program malfunction or just purely simply Windows.

Funny that. I was reading someone else had the same type of problem on a forum this morning. They had just updated QuickTime and restarted their computer and got the evil M$ message of doom saying they were bolloxed until they whipped out their recovery disk and gave the computer what it wanted.
I would hazard a guess that you should choose "C" but er, how many installations of Windows do you have on your computer?

I think only 3 (C,D & E) does that sound right? I'm useless with this sort of stuff.

I tried to fix it using the instructions above and I got as far as getting into System32 in command promt but when I try to rename it, it tells me there is no such file (so it's obviously missing, not just corrupt) and when I try to expand it, it says ''Access Denied''

So I'm doing 'Set up Windows' and hopefully it will recognise there's a system already on there and find the problem...I dunno - im running out of options.

If this fails i'll just have to restore the entire computer, which sucks as I have so much non-backed up work on there, doh!

Thanks for ur help anyway guys. :)

The instructions talk about C:\windows\system32, yours is on D: etc. That's why it says there's no such file.

Try again and replace all C:'s with D:'s.

Mella i am not sure if this would work but it's worth a try.

1: Restart the computer and press F8
2: Choose option 6, Translated to English it would say something like - latest known configuration.

Go with that and see what happens.

I tried all your instructions and tips and none of it worked, I don't know if it was because it couldn't solve the file problem, but I reckon it was probably because I'm thick as pig shit and computers hate me!

In the end I got so fed up I restored the whole system and Windows...AMAZINGLY all my work is still on the comp..Dunno how long for though so I'm backing it all up now! That'll teach me.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for your suggestions though, you guys rock!!!!

Mella when you try to repair windows you do a repair but you dont press R when it asks you to repair from the console!

you want to chose to contiue to install windows then a couple of screens later it asks you if you want to repair again but this time NOT using recovery console.

Choosing repair at that point everything would have worked.

I know you fixed your problem I just thought I'd let you know for future reference :)

Are you kidding me ! Ive installed windows XP over and over again I know EXACTLY what Im talking about !!

In the instructions when running windows setup you are first provided with the repair option that Mella mentioned which was to choose to repair with the recovery console.

You dont use that option what you do is choose to proceed with the windows install. When it gets to the point of chosing a drive to install on it will detect that an existing windows install is there and ask you once again if you would like to repair !

It's at this point that if you choose the repair option it will get everything repaired automatically instead of you having to use the complicated recovery console method.

Ive done it a bunch of times I definitely know what im talking about.

THIS BELOW is taken from a site I just found through google talking about the method I just highlited above.

    XP Repair install

Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating the Repair Install. You can print a text version for reference. repair.txt

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
