I wanted to have permalinks like url.com/postname/ in Wordpress but with my new host I get url.com/index.php/postname/. Does it effect SEO in any way ?

Do you have a .htaccess floating around? I dont think you should see index.php
at any rate, select permalinks, select custom and use this %postname% which should give you site.com/postname only.

    hope that helps,

ok set your permalinks to default. Upload a blank .htacess to the root folder>change permalinks back to custom. That should fix your issues. If you are on godaddy for instance it also takes them a while to actually push an apache directive from time to time.

In your case it may be that .htaccess was not created or is not writable, you will want to make sure it is or wp can't write to it.

That didn't help and even if I choose Numeric structure it shows /index.php/archives/%post_id%... Any other ideas ?

Not really, that is how you fix that issue. If you want to pm a link I can look at it for you though.
