Help with my niche :)

I am a dentist (only graduated a little over a year ago) and have done some work with php/html/css. I have played around with writing blogs etc. But I feel like I just can't find anything I can attract people with. I am looking for any way I can use my profession as my edge.

I guess I am asking for a website you would like to see a dentist make/participate in online :)

    Thanks for any ideas guys.

Good to finally become a member of these forums =)

You can start a blog and using your edgy coding skills, develop a dynamic website (think web 2.0) / shiny buttons, lol. Blog about tips and tricks for staying healthy dental-wise and stuff. Develop quizzes for people to learn from, daily questionnaires, etc.

    Thank you for the reply.

Do you have any other recommendations for how to make it dynamic?

Would you recommend this in blog format? Forum format? More typical looking website (not necessarily like a blog)?

how about a reality-website? You have a webcam in your office and have patients signoff on being on camera?

i think it would be neat.

Or do what a few doctors are doing. Have webcam sessions.. find away users could contact you via webcam and show you their teeth etc.... maybe do a q&a session on stikcam or something.

Well, when I go to the dentist, I plan on someone working on my teeth, not record me and let everyone on the Internet see-- for whatever reason =O Sounds creepy, homie.

This is a pretty cool idea for the web, but I am afraid of what it would do to my patient-doctor interactions :)

    I started this a while back. - miniteeth.com

I have to say I did give up rather quickly on writing new things after not seeing many results. Any hints/tips?

    Thank you

You could always join other dental forum communities if you don't believe you will get any visitors. I say try again and follow through my blog idea. You might see some action!

You can include in your contracts a section where they can apply to be on your mailing list where they will receive email notifications when you release a new blog post, tip/trick, etc.

Lots and lots of people pay damn good money for creepy. lol. all it takes is a few well chosen google searches to prove that.

But seriously, entropy, just get yourself a simple hosting service, like hostmonster, install wordpress and just start doing your thing. You obviously know some web design, so you'll also know that you can customize wordpress sites to make them look as much or as little like a blog as you want.

Then write what you know. For example, you could write a blog as a dentist about the funny/interesting stories you hear, or are involved in with all of your patients. If you just retired you must have loads of things like that. Crazy office stories. I would read that.

Thanks for the great advice. I actually just graduated from dental school a year ago so I am really just getting my career going. Check out miniteeth.com this is what i started a while back. Let me know if you have some advice for that.

I am not a pediatric dentist, so I may start a blog about adult dentistry (which is what I do for the most part anyway)

Oh ok, I read your first post too quickly, I thought you said you were retiring. If you are just getting your career started then there are tons of cool ways you could start a blog.

Like I said, even for an adult dentist there has got to be some hilarius, or at least interesting stuff, that goes on with different patients just on a day to day basis. You could easily blog about that.

As for the miniteeth.com, it is showing up as a parked domain from godaddy. hopefully you just typed the url wrong, cause otherwise your domain expired or something.

    Hey Entropy,

    Welcome to the forum mate.

Since you have a fair knowledge about HTML/PHP, you must build in a interactive site/blog.

Get the people to talk , get them involved.I have a couple of health related sites and instead of just posting, posting, posting, i believe in answering, questioning and solving.

The more you interact with the visitor, the more hits you get.

Just mess around with your PHP innovation and you might well make a strong website.

    Just my small input.
    Wishing you success
    Cheers

That's a really good idea. Make a blog about simple methods whereby you can keep your teeth healthy without the dentist to supervise all the time... Advertise it to your patients and dentistry forums, and hey ho, you should start getting some traffic.

By interactive, do you mean polls, quizzes etc? Any specifics on that? Thank you :)

You have to type in www before the domain. I am a new member and can't have live links in my posts.

    Exactly! :)

Quizzes are fun, you can also start a discussion forum like thing, how about creating a toon mascot for your site?

    That would be great!!

How about participating in professional networking like LinkedIn and SelfGrowth? You could also do some offline marketing like giving brochures to your patients with your email and blog written on them.
